i did a similar board for a friend. 5'3 quad "pod". I think i used about 4" nose rocker. its super flat until the last foot or less. the tail rocker accelelrated out the back. it was like 2.25" or so. these are just guess numbers, i made it a while back so I can't remember. go to surfstationstore.com and check out the rockers
I don’t know if I should have done it, but I put the image into AutoCAD and scaled the dimensions as if it were 5’-6" long. A little like cheating. Flame me if you wish.
For what it’s worth, I don’t like how either of them ride for the average surfer. Seems that most guys that I see riding them struggle to catch waves, and struggle to keep up speed through a turn. Can’t really cut loose and manouver them, because they are constantly trying to keep their balance.
A few really good surfers rip on them, because they have the skill to control them. A common misconception is they will make an average surfer rip, and they don’t. They are a techincally difficult board to ride well.
Thanks for that feedback everysurfer - According to the marketing, this thing is supposed to make you surf like KS. I misunderstood it to be a short fat egg. From the website:
The Pod, an inspiration in Kelly’s for new surfboards and design direction, is built to fly. Deep concaves with a foiled nose and a swallow tail keep the Pod lively and maintains its high performance. The “snub” nose puts volume forward, allowing for maximum planing and wave catching. The wide, curvy outline makes the Pod friendly for all levels of surfers.
I’ve physically measured a couple Biscuits in that size range. Typical rockers are 3.25"N + 1.5"T. Fish territory. I’ve never measured a Pod but I know they have more rocker than that, although somewhat less than the HPSBs. For typical SoCal type conditions it’s hard to go wrong with 4/2 but that might not work in faster conditions. I’m not a fan of combos involving a lot of nose width + a lot of rocker.
Notice that that is how every multi-milion dollar board company sells there product. "this wetsuit will make you rip harder" "this board will make you surf like Dane."
Problem is, people fall for it year after year, and that is why big named US surf media runs the show. The thing is, average joe down at the beach thinks he surfs like his favorite pro, but in reality, doesn't. That's why you always see people kooking it up on the new board that they wasted $625 on that was built dirt cheap in some 3rd world country.
Notice how most of their boards say it'll work for "all levels of surfers." I smell $$$ hidden behind that phrase!!!
Keep in mind, Slater is a freak. Give him any piece of crap board and he will still surf better than 98.9% of the rest of us.
Look at the boards the vast majority of tour pros surf in heats and you will find that they are pretty conventional........they really haven't changed all that much in the past 15 years. Its the indian, not the arrows.
