Al Merrick Pod (need help)

Hi all

I have a friend that wants me to replicate the Al Merrick Pod, (5'10" 20 1/4" 2 1/2").

Does anyone know what kind of front/rear rocker they have or nose and tail widths?

I'd take a trip down to the local surf shop but I'm land locked and don't have access. Any information would be great.

Also taking blank recomendations.

thanks Guys.

Here is the outline so far, I think I have it dialed in but I'm lost on the rocker. (please comments on the outline if you think it can be improved)

The rocker as is: nose: 5" tail: 2.5" (these are just the defaults, my feeling is this board is way flatter, maybe 3" in the nose and 2" in the tail)

Thanks

Josh

i did a similar board for a friend. 5'3 quad "pod". I think i used about 4" nose rocker. its super flat until the last foot or less. the tail rocker accelelrated out the back. it was like 2.25" or so. these are just guess numbers, i made it a while back so I can't remember. go to surfstationstore.com and check out the rockers

i've never seen a Biscuit in person but,...

with that much curve in the outline, i'm guessing you could go with even less rocker.

what does 2 1/2 and 1 1/4 look like? is your buddy looking for a full on groveler or something with more range but doesn't grovel as well.

here is the rocker and outline from the actual board.

Any guesses on the rocker, front looks like 4" + maybe even 5", Tail looks like maybe 2".

how long is that thing, Randomgo?  Is it the same as a Biscuit only dif tail?  Can you do the same shot on the Biscuit?  thx

I don’t know if I should have done it, but I put the image into AutoCAD and scaled the dimensions as if it were 5’-6" long.  A little like cheating.  Flame me if you wish.

There is also a deep single concave under the front foot which makes your stringer rocker flatter. you can't see it in the side profile obviously.

that doesn't look like a straight on rocker shot to me...

looks like the outline is making it look like more rocker than it actually has

The image is from surfstation, says its should be a 5'8" but you're close Everysurfer. I need to expand it to a 5'10"

A biscuit is a little different, I think its thicker and as you said the tail is different.

Here is the pod 5'8" (top) and biscuit 6'0" (bottom) side by side:

For what it’s worth, I don’t like how either of them ride for the average surfer.  Seems that most guys that I see riding them struggle to catch waves, and struggle to keep up speed through a turn.  Can’t really cut loose and manouver them, because they are constantly trying to keep their balance.

A few really good surfers rip on them, because they have the skill to control them.  A common misconception is they will make an average surfer rip, and they don’t.  They are a techincally difficult board to ride well.

Thanks for that feedback everysurfer - According to the marketing, this thing is supposed to make you surf like KS. I misunderstood it to be a short fat egg. From the website:

The Pod, an inspiration in Kelly’s for new surfboards and design direction, is built to fly. Deep concaves with a foiled nose and a swallow tail keep the Pod lively and maintains its high performance. The “snub” nose puts volume forward, allowing for maximum planing and wave catching. The wide, curvy outline makes the Pod friendly for all levels of surfers.

I’ve physically measured a couple Biscuits in that size range.  Typical rockers are 3.25"N + 1.5"T.   Fish territory.      I’ve never measured a Pod but I know they have more rocker than that, although somewhat less than the HPSBs.  For typical SoCal type conditions it’s hard to go wrong with 4/2 but that might not work in faster conditions.   I’m not a fan of combos involving a lot of nose width + a lot of rocker.

Stuckinoregon, I'm glad you caught on to it.

Notice that that is how every multi-milion dollar board company sells there product. "this wetsuit will make you rip harder" "this board will make you surf like Dane."

Problem is, people fall for it year after year, and that is why big named US surf media runs the show. The thing is, average joe down at the beach thinks he surfs like his favorite pro, but in reality, doesn't. That's why you always see people kooking it up on the new board that they wasted $625 on that was built dirt cheap in some 3rd world country.

Notice how most of their boards say it'll work for "all levels of surfers." I smell $$$ hidden behind that phrase!!!

Keep in mind, Slater is a freak.  Give him any piece of crap board and he will still surf better than 98.9% of the rest of us.

Look at the boards the vast majority of tour pros surf in heats and you will find that they are pretty conventional........they really haven't changed all that much in the past 15 years.  Its the indian, not the arrows.

wide boards are faster than narrow boards
