alaia outline

I have alais on the brain. I just glued a blank up and I was going to take an outline off a 9’0 wegner that is at a shop near by but it is not there anymore. If any body has any good outline pics and a few measurement it would be a great help.

I think I want to go big and long 8’6 x 20 or wider…

I see lots of vids of people ripping on short alais, do I want to go short? I think I will use it in perfect small waves though.

Where is the wide point? How wide is to wide? At 20 inch wide point how wide is my true tail width?

Thanks to all.

I like oldys outlines and that pic posted on his thread, one with the inlay, mine are goin with the zeppelin outline, navy zr-1, graf zeppelin, if you dont get anything after a few hours and want an outline let me know.

9ft is more of an olo than an alaia. the benefits of the alaia - flex, thin rails, parabolic outline are kind of lost when you get much beyond 7ft. The 8ft alaias that I have made are nowhere near as fun as the 6-7footers, but they are a bit easier to paddle.

a rockerless 9ft board pearls pretty easily, especially if you are going to be surfing in small waves.

if you want seomthing that rips, you will need to go at least shorter than 7ft and around 16 inches wide. if you want something that cruises, then 9ft can work but I dare say you would want at least some nose rocker in it.

regarding the width of alaias, they get more slippery as you increase the width in my experince.

good luck.

oh, I forgot to say I have a bunch of templates from 5-8ft for alaias. If you want any, have a look here - http://www.surfinggreen.com.au/How-Shape-Alaia-Surfboard

then send me an email and Ill get them to you.

I cut it out and I’t looks good, I have to wait on the rain to stop to go any further.

Stoked! Shaped my first alaia out of a laminated pine “blank” from Home Depot and have surfed it three times so far. Soooo much fun! I was giggling after each wave. The glide is amazing and the board actually turns and trims much better than I expected.

Thanks to Surfing Green for emailing me the template, I made a parabolic 5’11" x 17" or so x 3/4" thick with a single concave through the back 2/3 of the board…also rolled the rails. Will attempt to post some pics my buddy took of me at a little local reef yesterday…
