almost done, but......

What’s happening peeps?

I just finshed shaping board #3 today, well I thought i was done till I noticed that the stringer is raised just tiny bit. I’m sure if glassed that way, it will leave a spine like rigde running down the deck. I’m thinking about taping the stringer off on both sides and block planing it. I dont want to thin the board out anymore than it is and definetly dont want to tear out and foam with the block plane? any advice?

Thanks

3" long mini plane, usually cut at a slight angle along the stringer from the middle of the board out either end. About $9.

Then you can use the exact same plane on a overly thick blank and thin it across the stringer, the fastest way to thin down 1/2" in about 4 minutes, but you then need to spend 15 minutes cleaning the chunkholes out with sureform and sandpaper on a block.

Nothing like a sharp as hell spoke shave to bring the stringer down. Resting it on the wood at a slight angle and shaving down the length carefully, it’s possible to get the stringer flush without scratching the foam. No tape required, just keep the blade sharp.

Sorry… What? Are you talking about taking 1/2" of thickness out of a board with a 3" block… in 4 minutes? Is that a joke? -Carl

Thanks for the good advice got my self a cheap little spokeshape and patiently brought that stringer. I see what you mean about having a sharp blade on it though, the one that came on it was not as sharp as I needed it, leading to some very frustrating moment. Where did you get the one in the pic?

Thanks again

Sorry LeeDD, but I’m confused as well. Maybe I’m missing something obvious but, if Carl didn’t catch it…

Could someone please explain?

You missed!

Talking 2 different usages in surfboard building for a mini planer.

That spokeshave looks cool and interesting too!

Sure, you gots a 3.25" thick blank, you want to shave deck down 5/8 ASAP.

Planer is first choice, but what if you don’t gots one?

Take that miniplane, cut sideways across the blank set on deep, tear out more foam than you’d ever believe in the least amount of time…then the cleanup takes time.

Got it!

Thank GOD I have a planer!!!

Johnny,

I think I got this one from Traditional Woodworker, check http://www.traditionalwoodworker.com/default.php?cPath=2_135

Also Clark Foam sells these things and I believe the replacement blades are free.

If money is no object, check out the selection of Japanese planes on this site: http://www.hidatool.com/woodpage/planes.html

These tools are killer. The spoon bottom plane is handy as are the finger and smaller block planes for this application.
