Other than a semi-gun, what do you ride as a step up? Looking for alternative step up options including single fins and widow makers something with more volume. What are the dimensions of your board?
Hey there! I read recently that the pros are shortening their semi-guns, ie: 6’6" That seems to be the trend. I dunno what they’re doing with the thickness etc. I imagine the width wouldn’t change much.
adios
a 5’11" smallwave swallow
PROS are moving towards smaller step up boards, but these guys are ridiculous! They surf TOH waves like most people hope to on a HH day.
6’4x19x2.5 volume carried a little further out towards the rails flat bottom, maybe a bit of rolled V in the nose. I’m 5’9 165-170, I’d be wearing a 5/4 when I surf this board though. Held in comfortably in DOH fairly thick shorepoundish waves. I don’t have the board with me at the moment so I can’t give you rocker numbers. I can tell you that the tail looks wide for a board that handles big surf so well.
What size waves do you want to surf?
Hollow? Mush?
What’s your weight?
What type of boards do you normally surf?
Barrels or turns?
We all want a board that paddles and surfs well, but everything is a trade off. The best option is incremental changes from your “go to” board towards a board with the ability to hold in bigger heavier conditions, you don’t want something that feels foreign under your feet when things start getting serious.
Catching the wave is only half the battle.
