I use the local hardware store brand of acrylic concrete sealer and it works great. Just airbrushed 7 boards today mixing the acrylic concrete sealer with either poater paint or acrylic paint and both worked well. The only diffrerence was the thicker poster paint needed more acrylic sealer.
Add a touch of water to the poster Paint then the sealer. Also make sure that the Poster paint you use is UV stable some of the cheap stuff for kids isn’t. A good quality egg tempera can last years. Think about this the murals on the walls of Roman ruins like you see at Pompei were done with an egg tempra.
I hate to keep repeating myself but; I tried Future once and did not like it. Too much Acrylic. Balls up if you try to burnish it. I have used Behr tile sealer for years with very good results. Wipe it on with a staining sponge, paper towel or cotton rag. One side at a time and let it. dry. Make sure you get NO drips or runs onto the opposite side. Especially at the nose and tail. . Burnish the board with an Orbital sander and a 3M Grey Scotchbrite pad. The heat generated from the pad will cause the sealer to flow out and the shine will rise. It’s amazing to watch when you are Burnishing with the pad. Burnishing is the step most guys don’t do. They just wipe it on and leave it. Futures and other floor finishes do not Burnish well because they contain too much Acrylic. I buy Behr at Home Depot for about $26 p/gallon. One gallon does a lot of boards. Similar products are sold at Smart & Final and janitorial supply houses. This is the infamous “Secret Sauce”. Also doubles as a thinner for Acrylic Latex paint and Spackle. Lowel
If you use a 3M pad you’ll be fine. I use the Grey because it’s a fine enough grit that it won’t scratch. I just cut it the size of my orbital and attach it with a little 3M Spray adhesive. You can see the shine come right up as you go. Don’t spend too much time on the channels. I stay away from floor finishes like Mop n Glow, future etc. they are clear and thicker; which is a sure sign they contain too much acrylic. The sealer is thin, runny and cloudy like milk.
Alot guys on this site have ragged on me over the years for recommending this finish because it’s not a toxic resin or automotive finish that requires a thru the grit wet & dry, polish &rubout etc. the truth is that in the Surfboard World; most of what we do, methods, materials ets are borrowed from other industries. Boatbuilding, automotive, composite/ aircraft etc. A well known guitar manufacturer who makes guitars from Carbon Fiber uses this method to finish their guitars. It’s simple, straight forward and non toxic. I use this method on all my shortboards, Epoxy and Poly. Longboards are usually gloss & polish because that’s what people expect on a Longboard. I turned a few guys onto this method in Oregon who were using a second Hotcoat polished, sprayed automotive finishes etc. They have become “Secret Sauce” converts.
how does the behr hold up? do you apply it over pinlines or any sanded hotcoat art…or do you rely on a traditional second hotcoat/gloss for that? Ive tried some of the other slop n mop finishes and was never quite satisfied
I will always reccomend a gloss coat over pins and art. The Behr could be used as you suggested. Two coats are better than one. Don’t burnish between coats. Burnish after two. It holds up really well.
I had to sand down a coat of Behr sealer once. Recoated. Did a second coat and surfaced with a maroon pad followed by a light gray pad. I liked the result.
In the past you have recommended using the Behr Low-Lustre concrete sealer. Have you ever considered/tried using the Behr Wet-Look concrete sealer, surfacing with a light gray pad (800-1000 grit equivalent) followed by a white pad (1200-1500 grit equivalent) to get a more gloss-like finish? I have not but am tempted.
I haven’t actually tried it myself; but I do remember in a previous thread on the same topic someone saing they had tried it and liked the result. I would think the issue would be the shine after burnishing. Would the finished product come out that glossy? Guess I’ll try it sometime and let you all know. Lowel
