Am I Too BIG???

I have had an 8’4 South Point Epoxy 2+1 board and I used to be able to hang five fairly well.

Now I have grown an inch or so since we last got waves and I and am 180 instead of 167 (I worked out a sh*t load too).

Is it just me being rusty or am I really to big to do it without getting supper low (like when I’m on a really short board)

It is about 2.75 thick…

Thanks for the input

8’4"…2 3/4"…that’s enough foam for a 200+ pound man no problem.

The board is enough foam for you to surf, but not noseride. For a nose rider I would probably go 9’8"-10’ range. 8’4" is too short for anyone over 100lbs to effectively nose ride. So, yes you are too big. Just to be clear here: I am not saying it is impossible, I am saying it is overly difficult and not practical, sort of like doing a snap on log; it can be done but it is far easier on other equipment. For the record I have gotten at least a hang 5 on every board I have ever owned, from 5’0" fish to a 5’10" super-chip to 9’9" classic log.

My fault…I blacked out on the nose riding part. riderofwaves is right that you need more board. Your not really talking good noseriding size until your over 9 feet. A 9’8" or bigger is great if you want to nose ride and you are good at handling a board that big, but if you want an all around board I’d get something between 9’ and 9’6" with the 2+1 for versatility. I’m 6’4" 200+ and I can hang um on a 9’ board no problem. For myself I have found it VERY hard no noseride on an epoxy board. They are so light and fluttery it’s hard to walk without drastic board shifting… for me anyway. If I was wanting a board to nose ride I would get a PU board not epoxy.

Ok so basically my next board should be a 10’0 single fin PU that is like 3 inches thick?

and I did notice that the board would shift a lot when I walked on it.

So the final question is how wide should it be?

I always say a good nose ridder is around 23" A 10 foot board might be 23 1/4" to 23 3/8" but you’ll find that much over 23" it get’s hard to get your arm around it.

I know a guy that is at least 220+ lbs, and he rides your average 2-3/8" thick 6’-2" shortboard, and he still rips. But he has always ripped on a shortboard, even when he was 170 or less. Another guy is around 190+/- and rides 6-3’s and he is world class in even the sloppiest surf.

Don’t think because you are heavier it means you have to ride a log.

Ozzy see the noseride factor. If they want to do turns, it is time to step off the log onto something shorter, and not necessarily and fat oversized fish.

Yep I dont really get the waves to pull turns.

Most of the time its kneeish high, with a rolling face.

Never TOO BIG!

There is always a board for some one. I build a lot of HPSB’s however when the occassion presents it’s self I have been known to bust a Nose Rider out:

Volan Cloth, Green Formula US Blank, Fabric Inlay, Handmade fin copied from a VELZY Template. Sorry Dale!

There are plenty of guys on here that can make you a board this is my garage special. See what Swaylocks can do for you!

ROLL DA DICE:

South Point Epoxy.  Correct me if i am wrong, but isn’t that one of the generic surfboard-like popouts  manufactured by companies like Bic?  if so, the problem isn’t you, it’s the POS under your feet.

plus u have grown an inch and put on 15 lbs of muscle since u last surfed.  so that has been a long time.  yes, u are rusty.

and most of the time u are riding knee high slop.

what surfding said…and showed.

9’8 x 23 x 3 x 20 x 17 x 9 squaretail. parallel rail noserider with hips. deep pivot fin about 10". dome the deck to thin the rails a bit.  nose concave. 50/50 rails in the nose. 70/30 in the middle. 30/70 rails in the aft section.  usblanks red.  l layer of 6 each side with a 6 deck patch. weight about 20 lbs.   that oughta hold u until u hit 240 lbs.

yep its a pop out lol.

It was my first board so I was just looking for a board I can beat to crap and it still looks like knew for all that I have put it through. :)

this board I think I will shape my self (my first foam board), there is also one shaper in my town and I think I might have him help me out a bit.
