Amateur Hour

I am currently trying to turn a 6’ 2" board into a 5’5". The nose of the board was broken and it is very old so I figured its worth a shot. Heres my scenario…

  1. Cut the broken nose off and sanded the rails to make a new nose.

  2. Sanding the fiberglass off the bottom of the board to get to the foam to make a little bit more of a lip in the nose.

  3. Will then glass the bottom and rails.

*I live inland so no surfshops around. Can I use the 3M fiberglass cloth and resin from Home Depot? How do I get the fiberglass to stick to the top that has already been glassed?

This is the first board crafting I have ever done. Any help, comments suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hey ResHead, Got stock in3M? Blue Chip.

I dunno, what you're proposing is kinda sketchy.  Can you post some pics, or give us a link to some pics?  It really doesn't sound like its gonna be worth the trouble.  Re-shaping a board takes some real skills, and even then you have to have the right board to begin with.

And no, don't use Home Depot products for glassing a surfboard.  No surfshops around is not an issue - do you have a mailbox around?  Order what you need, there are several good, reputable supply shops on the internet.

It sounds to me like your best bet is to replace or repair the broken nose.  But I haven't seen the board, so I'm just theorizing.

Do you have experience with ding repair, or working with fiberglass and resin?

I order all of my shaping/glassing/surfing stuff online,I dont even have to leave the stuff just shows up at my doorstep. It’s faster to shape and glass a new blank, easier too.You can cut the nose off clean and glue on a wood nose block, maybe some balsa from hobby shop.Reshape the nose block until it looks the way you want then glass it.

Since it probably won’t turn out too pretty, anything would work.  Home depot laminating is fine, but I don’t think they sell sanding resin, so you’ll need to go shopping anyway.  MIght not need a surf shop, but instead a plastics vendor.  Revchem, Fiberglass Hawaii, or something like that.

Where are you located.  Inland is a pretty big place!  Mail order works pretty good too.

dbares and everysurfer,

The Home Cheepo near my house sells what they call ‘fiberglass resin.’  I’ve used it to glass on wood fins.  It is basically sanding resin and not laminating resin.  It worked just fine and sanded easily, but has an amber color which I thought looked kind of cool on the wood fins.  Dbares, sand the fiberglass first if you want the new stuff to adhere to it if that was your question.  Mike

Always use quality 3M products!

And... Don't forget to wear a quality 3M respirator that is suitable for your specific application.

What the heck is a 3M blue chip?  Is that some kind of new tape...What number is it?  I need to try it out!

I bet it's really good what ever it is?
