American Pickers...History Channel

Just saw a show on TV where a couple of guys from Iowa who deal in antiques took a trip to the West Coast. They visited a guy named “Bird” who had a large collection of old boards housed in a quonset hut with a wave painted on the front of the building. They bought a Lis fish, a “Honolua” semi gun thruster, and a mid 70s Plastic sting. I think they paid too much for the three. Although, the Lis was a nice score. The PF was donated to the SHF.

Does anyone know who this “Bird” guy is?

i got a friend who likes to use  'hemmojang ’

I was introduced to a word ‘kapa kahi’

which was in refrence to old clothes

'He was wearing his kapakahi pants…

Eric Bird Huffman.   Runs the South Coast Surf Shop in PB. San Diego.  Keep his boards in that Quansit hut.

Something told me it was Huffman, but I was not sure. Doesn’t he have a brother…Marshall?

One of the old Lobster Lounge crew.

Howzit Sammy,Just finished watching the show and Bird did have a few boards in that hut, what a collection. Aloha,Kokua

I saw the show too.  They got hosed on the boards.  Ha Ha.  And then the guy at the museum..............WTF.  Sad thing is now even more people will think every crappy old board is gold.

Both Huffman and the guy at the museum kept calling the Plastic a “stinger”. Look up the original design by Aipa and you’ll see it’s called a “sting”. Anyone know who the museum guy is? He seemed a bit clueless.

I also think they got hosed. Especially on the Honolua. Nothing special or historic about it. The PF is not old enough to be of real collector value, either. Most likely built after the label changed hands. Mike Wolfe was all gaga about it having “the original fin”. Looked like a stock FU that could be bought off-the-shelf today.

Huffman can spot a couple of marks when he sees them, I guess. Shame that the Lis was sold to a couple of guys from Iowa and it will probably wind up as decor in some inland theme bar.

Bird has a brother Rex. Rex is  / was a knee boarder. His brother made it into a few pictures in the mags....yes specially at The Lounge.

It should comes as no suprise that poor guy got hosed on his surfboard.

I wish those two guys would come to my store.

Just telling my wife how those two got beat.  First they paid too much, and then they feel that they did so well that they donate a board to the museum.  All well and good on the donation, but it all seemed like a theatrical set up.  Don’t get me wrong, I generally like the show, but this episode just seemed a bit to staged, especially to those that post here.

Gomer Pyle.

I generally like that show, but seems like they paid a lot of $$ for those boards.

One of the funniest things I saw was how they edited the show together.  They were supposed to be in malibu at the start of the show but they were showing hwy 101 south of swamiis headed towards cardiff, and then in another spot they were showing the 101 when you head north from solana beach into cardiff.

I saw that too.    I've known Bird since he was 13, working at Select Surf Shop for Phil.     The whole thing was very staged.    I'm sure it wowed them in Iowa.  Here, not so much.

I also noticed that the geographic sequencing was all hemojang. And, I’m from the EC.

Something tells me that the PF they bought might really be a Highsmith era board built at South Coast.

Kokua?

"hemojang"?????

I saw that last night too. I have actually seen that Sting PF at the museum not too long ago. Cool board. I think I noticed that the Honolua in the show was snapped and put back together right in front of the fins! haha

Ask Kokua or Ambrose.

hemojang...you know... FUBAR, SNAFU, Circle Jerked. etc.

Used in a sentence:

Your hair, it is quite hemojang. As is your lifestyle choice. That also is hemojang.

Okay, Thanks Fellas. Been fubar'd, snafu'd, bohica'd, but certainly not the third mentioned by the pinnaped vigilante. (I prefer solo flights).

The formers are acronyms but hemojang....WTFO??

I'll bite. Time to pm Kokua. "Help Mr. Wizard"!

*arog - I noticed the same thing about the board being snapped and repaired.  The museum guy was all fired up about the quality of the paint job.  Good score on that lis, but I dont think they will get their money back on the resale.
