American Samoa

Anyone here been to American Samoa?  I may have opportunity coming up to visit the island, curious to know a little about it, if anyone has visited or lived there.

It’s like normal Samoa, except you can get KFC, McDonald’s, Starbucks and a fucking M16 with your happy meal.

come on huck, goin that far come down and see us in N.Z. you’d be more than welcome.

don’t know about american samoa but a bit about   “normal” samoa, good people (no m16’s) , great food (no kfc)  great weather and great breaks.

any more give me a yell

A friend who was a top level surfer lived there for a year.  Said the surf was great but the reefs are all crazy sharp and getting dry docked on bare reef is a very real possibility no matter how good you are.

I heard the same as Mako from a friend who’s girlfriend is Samoan and visits often to surf.

Hahahahahahaha @ Beerfan

Hope I didn’t offend anyone, apologies if I did. 3 weeks into a 6 week sentence in a leg splint. Cabin fever.

I browsed one of surf travel sites for Samoa, there was a place called dragons breath. I stopped looking haha. They do all mention very sharp reef.

Remember when the “Doonesbury” character Duke (representing Hunter S. Thompson) was appointed governor of American Samoa? He had a “minister of surfing affairs”.

Of course, he also had a “minister of marijuana and central nervous system depressants”. Those were some funny comic strips…

For instance, upon first meeting said “minister of marijauna and…”, Duke turned to his aide and said “cancel my appointments for the afternoon!”

havent been to american samoa but surfed upolu and savaii in western samoa - what a beautiful place!!! really good waves and very uncrowded…i sure would not pass up the chance to go…

i thought it was pretty funny Beerfan

Yes if the opportunity arose I would go for it.  Heard good reports over the years.  Ditto for Guam.  No passort.  No Problema.

no first hand knowledge, but a friend went there about 6 years back, and said the waves were seriously “square”…

I bet it’s warm &  pretty too!

Think Western Samoa is where you want.

Funny Mike.

I knew a guy that Lived on guam in the 1960s His Father was in The Military and was stationed there for a couple of years. He moved back when he was hiding from his local draft board lived there again for a couple of years.  Made it to other Islands around the Pacific as well. He lived this gypsy surfer life for many years. Returning to San Diego to earn some cash and head out again. I lost touch with John many years ago But still remember his stories of surfing lonely waves on remote Islands. In those days he said that a lot of locals looked n hippy surfers as something odd and not as drunk as the usual ex-Pat westerner looking for paradise.

I’ve heard good things too…
