An Idea For The Think Tank!

This is no joke. I went surfing this past weekend with a friend of mine who has an old beat up longboard. 9’6" x about 23" wide. My friend is not one to be overly concerned about much let alone dings in his board. Needless to say this board has duck tape all over it (which as we know, does nothing) and is delaminated to the point where you can litterally feel the water inside the board which is freely moving between the glass and the foam. You can feel the water moving around in the board has you paddle it. Long story short, the board rides great and seems to improve the more waterlogged and the heavier it gets. When you are paddleling for a wave and it lifts the tail, the water inside the board rushes to the front and when you bottom turn you can feel it move to the tail. The weight shift from the water inside the board helps with wave entry and with a little practice it almost creates a slingshot effect when coming off a bottom turn. The board still nose rides great and is still somewhat responsive from the tail. I had ridden this board in the past when it was not so beat up and it rode great, but it seems to ride better with the water moving around in it. This board is so fun to ride, it’s trippy. Has any one seen, heard or done any experimentation with weights inside of a board? Perhaps a hollow chamber(s) with a weight(s) (or perhaps water) that has the ability of traveling from nose to tail? Have I lost my mind? I’m not suggesting this for anything but a nose rider but who knows. I know what they say there are no new ideas, and I figured if anyone has ever fooled around with this theory, someone hear might of heard or seen it.

Damn! Very interesting. Reminds me of the wave bat from years ago. The same theory applied. As the bat is swung the inertia generated by the water traveling quickly to the end of the bat created a more poerful swing, which in turn made the ball go farther off the bat. Granted the differences in velocity are much less drastic but it certainly does sound like an idea worth experimenting with.

That’s what epoxy molded boards need. A series of chambers that have flush screw caps that allow one to add fishing weights/sand/water/depleted uranium to dial in what weight you want for the conditions. Offshore winds too strong for your 6 pound longboard? Add some lead!

Check Mike Hynson’s “water chamber” boards. They have some kind of sealed tube inside with H2O that sloshes about. Last time they were mentioned, it turned in to a bong joke (LOL!) Phil Edwards and “Law of Physics” say that heavier objects, once put into motion, tend to stay in motion (momentum.) P.E.'s take on it was he “Just ends up farther down the beach.” That is not to say that big heavy boards are quick, cut back better, do aerials better or anything like that. I have cut and pasted from a site that explains… Momentum can be defined as “mass in motion.” All objects have mass; so if an object is moving, then it has momentum - it has its mass in motion. The amount of momentum which an object has is dependent upon two variables: how much stuff is moving and how fast the stuff is moving. Momentum depends upon the variables mass and velocity. In terms of an equation, the momentum of an object is equal to the mass of the object times the velocity of the object.

if im not mistaken, i do believe that Hynson has been playing around with the fluid filled boards for a while now

Back in the early 70’s a friend of mine had a Hansen short board that had a plug in it that you could add water through and change the weight of the board. It was made out of some kind of honey comb foam. I never rode it so I can’t comment on it performance.

just like the inertia bat…(illegal in most leagues)…I like the depleated uranium as a filler! must try this???
