An old Channin/Diffenderfer from my aunt's garage...any info?

Hey...this is my first post, but I came here because I'd heard about this message board and all the board gurus that frequent it. It's kind of a long story, but my cousin got this board from her dad who had it shaped back in day somewhere in mission or pacific beach in San Diego. He passed it on to his daughter (my cousin) probably about 10 years ago and has been sitting in the rafters of my aunt's garage ever since. He and my aunt split up a long time ago and nobody talks to him anymore so I can't get any information from him. I took some photos but there weren't any dimensions on the board. Maybe someone knows something about it from the markings on the board?? I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks!

Sorry: can’t shed any light on your “find” (though I don’t doubt that somebody else around here will be able to do so).

I did enjoy the PICs, though: cool board.  Thanks for posting them.

That board is worth mad money, homes!

You’re rich!

I'm sure the board isn't worth that much...I just told my cousin I'd look into it for her. She wants to sell it but I think she should keep it. Anyway, I have no vested interest in the board or it's value. I'm just trying to help my cousin because she is my cousin and needs help. First step, I think, is figuring out how old the board is and what she might expect price wise.

I don’t think it is worth more than $1000. I am basing that on one I saw recently sell in a shop on Oahu. It had been in there at least 4 or 5 months. Last time I was in there, I pulled it out and was lookin it over again, and it caught the eye of a young girl was in there to buy a board…and she liked the color and decided to buy it!

I would tell her a little about Diff…and that someday she may regret selling the gift from dad…maybe this is an opportunity to re-connect with dad?? Or pass it on to one of her kids someday…or

Hey PD…I thought your computer was broke!

Doesn’t look old to me.  Late 80s perhaps.

Cool find.  I don't know why people post photos here sideways - it give me taco neck syndrome looking at them!

That board might be a gem. The Channin shop might know a lot about it and some of the owners/managers of retail surf shops in North San Diego county might know. Bird's Surf Shed on W. Morena Blvd. in San Diego has a lot of old boards and quite a few Channins but I didn't see any by Diffenderfer there.

I did the paint job on it. I would say sometime in the mid to late 80’s. Though I don’t specifically remember the board, I can tell by the 3rd photo of the laminates on the tail. It was made during one of those rare times, when Diff and Tony where actually friendly enough with each other, that they would allow the Channin/ Diffenderfer laminates to be glassed on a board.

Wow, thanks for all the replies and great information everybody. It is much appreciated. I think the next step might be to get it down to bird’s surf shed and have him take a look.

I’ll definitely advise my cousin to hold on to it, but if she decides to sell it I assume there is some sort of section on this site where I can post it for sale. I might also try putting it in some shop or maybe on craigslist.

Still not sure about the price so if anyone has any suggestions in that arena, I’d appreciate it. I’m also hoping bird will be able to help with that if I can get the board to his shop.

My question is;  Did Diff actually shape it or did it come off of the machine at KKL and just get a Diff lam slapped on it?  I' m thinking most likly the latter.

If it were an early Channin/Diffenderfer FROM THE 60's I would say it would have some real value. That board looks like an early "fun Board shape. Like atomized said mid 80's  Dennis Murphy called boards like that "Business mans specials" Boards for the Weekend warriors

Diff shaped it. It was made before KKL was started.

When Tony was part of KKL, he did offer Diff to build Channin/Diffenderfers off the machine. Diff declined.

Thanks again for all the posts. Bird at Bird’s Surf Shed is now the owner of the board and I think he might put it up for sale after he cleans it up; if not it might become a wall hanger. Head on down there and check it out if you’re in the area :)

One more thing that would be of interest. $$$?

I would also like to know how much Huffman paid for it. He sure made a tidy sum off those guys from the American Picker TV show (suckers).

And yes, there’s no way that’s a machine shape. (But, what do I know, anyway?)

atomized ------Thanks for settting me straight on that.  I'm always suspect when I see a screenprinted---"custom shape"  "handcrafted and Desined" rice paper lam.  Especially when one thinks about the KKL conection.  I had for a time a Greg Noll "Da Cat" that I got from Tony knowing full well Greg Noll never even laid eyes on the board.

Would love to try riding that board. Diffenderfer’s boards always seemed to lean toward softer, natural curves in his rails and bottoms. I never knew him personally, but would see him getting coffee some mornings in Haleiwa and he was always up for a smile and a good morning shaka.

Hi would anyone know anything about my old channin diff?

I started a thread here
