It’s gonna be a bit slow, but I’ll keep it updated. Got a Walker 9’4" blank in a trade today for an old kite. Stoked on that. I can get the rocker I want out of this blank…Dims for the board will be:
length: 5’4"
max width (2" above center): 22"
nose width (12" from nose): 20"
tail width (12" from tail): 19"
tail width: 19"
thickness: 3"
Just getting the curves right and then I’ll cut out the template and plane to thickness…I’ll keep the bottom flat and spoon out the nose on the deck.
The bottom will be flat (with the rocker), no concaves or hull shennanigans. I want FAST. The rocker will be, well…whatever it turns out to be. I tend to go more by “eye” when it comes to rocker anyways. It’ll either surf or it won’t…
I’m the wrong person to ask. I’m going with what I’ve read on certain blogs as well as pulling in the outline just a bit. I’m just a fan of the way they look in and out of the water, how I’ve seen them ride, and like everything I’ve heard. I’ve only shaped about 10 boards (3 logs, a few fish, some eggs and a few shortboards), so I’m a total newbie. Even if I KNEW exactly what needed to be done, I can guarantee you that I wouldn’t be able to translate that into my finished shape…LOL. Just having fun. It’s been too long.
The “traditional mini simmons”, as far as I can tell, is almost like taking a chunk out of an actual Simmons board. Very flat bottom, very parallel rails and has a lot of volume. I believe they were originally made with twin keels set very far out and back on the rails/trailing edge. Lots of modifications on the boards posted here…
I like the outline Tenover, good score on that blank. Not to hijack but here’s what I cooked up, maybe someone who knows better will chime in. My attempt at a hull entry to flat bottom, kinda pinched rails, don’t know if it will work. Maybe it will help you out, I like your approach of just eyeing it up and see what transpires though.
No hips for me. Also, I love the way these short boards look with a squared off nose, so I went that route too (It’s a 5’1" now…LOL). Kept a TON of volume all the way through the tail and stepped out the deck just a little bit. Can’t wait to ride this little thing.
I would like to do this with RR, but don’t want to buy a FULL kit for just this one board…Anyone in the SD area have a small amount that they would sell (epoxy, hardner and Additive F)? How much do you think I’d need for this little guy? If it’s going to take a bunch, I’ll just buy the full kit…It’s been so long since I’ve glassed, and I’ve only tried RR once and forgot everything I know…
I’d like to put a fin system in, but don’'t have any fancy jigs, so what fin system would be the EASIEST to install with just basic tools?
Sweet ride tenover!I usually get 2 large shortboards(6’8x21) out of a gallon and a half of RR epoxy with some resin to spare. The 96oz kit should be plenty to glass your board and set your fin system.Probox is one of the cheapest and easiest(and strongest!)fin systems to install, and you can put fcs fins in them also. They have some adjustable features too.
