Well, for every one successfull artist like Wyland,
you can find 100 struggling hungry ones.
If people are willing to part with ten large for a stick,
more power to him.

Wyland did a one man art show at Turtle Bay back in the late '80’s. A “starving artist” waitress (maybe why she was such a beeyotch) was telling customers at the hotel that his work wasn’t really art, and railed on him for only painting whales and dolphins, thus lacking originality, etc…
Anyways, he did an oil painting in the lobby while there that sold on the spot for 10 g’s. Not sure the paint was even dry. Art or not, it was nice looking stuff and it certainly sells!

Bill: I consider your hand made boards art pieces to. (Especially that Sunset Point project board!)

Um, a balsa surfboard half covered with paint?
And, um, “for display purposes only”?
Just a wankin’ wallhanger. Rather I had the balsa for good use as a rideable board. For example, I recently called around the few places that retail balsa sheets. 1/8 and 1/4 skins for a 6-foot fish were going to cost $185. Nuts to that!

Blow that photo up and note the backwards signature. Hopefully the webmaster just flipped the photo wrong and they didn’t produce all the boards made with that print with the backwards signature. Yikes!! My sister noticed the error and pointed it out to me a few days ago.

Thanks UncleD. You are too kind! I wish I could get for my original art, what Wyland gets for his!

I saw some of the boards before they were “painted”. Too narrow and thin for mortals to surf. Lots of crappy wood too. Would take a lot of work to get anything nice out of the roughed blanks.
Thomas Kinkade+saltwater=Wyland
Those boards are over priced in my book (no disrespect to Mr. Wyland)
They are definetly shaped solid balsa
but they are not individualy painted
What is on the boards is a fabric copy of Wyland’s art
An friend of mine (a shaper) has an order for shit loads of balsa swallow/fish boards, completely shaped and sanded
then they go off to the glass shop and they lam on the fabric and glass
Sorry to not respond to everyone’s posts. I am busy as usual.
My sister pointed out the HSN Wyland boards so I passed it on, knowing it would be a fun discussion. And likely some would know some inside scoop on their production.
Ken, the pricing is a bit steep for us mere mortals but in the Art World this is chump change. We have a Wyland Gallery right here in my shopping center where my shop is and Wyland is a good friend. As is the Gallery owner. His stuff doesn’t sell cheap.
The pricing of Art is always an interesting process. Kind of like collectables. Everyone has a different perception of what the “value” is or should be based on their perception, experience or ignorance. All that really matters in the end is that the customer is happy with their purchase.
With internet trading even the stock market is often driven by what is fashionable rather then the true value of the companies worth.
