how many of the pro’s use angle grinders to clean up lam. lap lines? just > want to hear some thoughts from the pros’s…kokua?? I use an air powered angle grinder with 3" roll lock discs…a great tool for lap grinding, ding repair etc.I do some shaping for big glass shops in Florida and just about all of them use them.
Guys I’m by no means professional, but I got this cool 3M 2inch sander attachment for my drill from the Hardware store. Made in your part of the world. Was only US $10 for the base and 3 discs that screw on. They getted pretty gummed up how can I get the lam resin off without buying new ones? think someone had a fix? Holger ps takes it down in no time and puts a smile on the dial, anyone say ready for hotcoat!

ever have a problem with smearing or discolorazation?
ever have a problem with smearing or discolorazation? That is major screw up…The discs that I use are white…stay off the red ones, they leave an ugly colored residue that even acetone wont remove.Try to stick with at least 50 grit. One time I ran out of discs and glued on a piece of the white 40 grit that I use for shaping and it worked even better.A lot of the smearing is due to the high speed it literaly melts the sandpaper…turn the speed down to be safe.Don’t feel bad I have been there.
where can i find those white discs?..and how many do you go through on an average longboard…say around 9’? i am obsessed with this lap thing. trying to get it perfect. little by little it gets better. this is my next idea to use an angle grinder. just wanted some input first…thanks guys
do you use white paper?
do you use white paper? Teddy I get the white roll lock discs from a friend of mine in the aircraft industry…he orders them in large quantitys andI will check on the supplier.Abrasives are a huge industry…the best stuff never makes it to Home Depo. The white 40 grit that I use for shaping comes from Atlantic Surfing Materials but the other surf distributers have it.It is easy to go overboard on this subject and Kokua Fiberglass does it all by hand, unless you are in production I would go the hand route. The main deal is that you dont have to get the laps that smooth…just get the big bumps and snags out,by the time you go thru all of the steps it will work out.Confusing Eh?

I use an angle grinder with 3" 50 grit rol-lock disks made by 3. The disk are green and do gum up a little, but I can usually pick the lumps off the disks with my fingers. The disks run a little over a buck a piece but they are a sure time saver, and no colored smears. I picked mine up from NAPA auto parts. Hope this helps. Travis

I use a small steel brush, its about an inch long and pretty tough. I’ll either just brush the disc, or hold the brush against the spinning disc. The trick is to brush often. (Where have I heard that before?) Surprisingly, the steel brush doesn’t remove the grit (or that much, if any.) Also, soaking in acetone (see, Gene’s comments) for the really nasty chunks. Kevin
ever have a problem with smearing or discolorazation? No problem, just take a little longer. Kokua
