another balsa sandwich

another one done ,just over 5 pounds ,i found some old brasillian mahogany chest of drawers at work and could see fins just wanting to be released! this board is for son number 2 who is still in australia ,he should have been back by now, 6ft 1 x 18/1/2 x 2 ,i have started to make one for myself at last ,will post some pics when done, pete

The fins look really nice on that board - Good Job!

Nice one Pete, keep them coming!

We’ll have to have a Sways UK compsand gathering some time!!

looks good

love the mahogany fins

can you give us your building scedual please

silly, i used 4 oz inside and 4 on the bottom ,the deck is 4 with a 3/4 deck patch of 5 oz, the three darker panels are high density wood so should be quite strong, the balsa is 2.2mm ,post cured at 50c for 10 hrs in the oven at work and glossed with 2 pac,

mark,

next time you are down this way let me know and we will meet up, pete

Will do Pete, going to Croyde Dec 2nd (fingers crossed for swell), may be down in December if I am lucky.

kay

im using 4 oz inside on my current build

its a 6 10 mini gun

wanted it hell tough for abuse in rocky and shallow surf breaks

i have found that the 2 oz inside and light balsa may not be up to my personal standards of durability

im using high density quarter sawn balsa this time as well

it should still be lighter than a light weight poopee

but i want to make a trampoline this time

my other boards can be bounced on

but im not gunna do it anymore

also will try extra reinforcement around the rails at the tail to further support futures boxes

Hey Pete -

Nice work. Wonder if you would provide me with detail of balsa rail construction? I.E. top and bottom panels first, then build up rail or ??? Thanks!

tell me about this 2 pac stuff everyone is talking about…

I’d love to be able to mow my hotcoat down to the weave and then gloss. Currently doing this, but glossing with epoxy afterwards and have to have a good degree of thickness to the gloss to stop fisheyes/pinholes. A different gloss coating might be just the ticket…

Its a 2 part urathane. Its the same thing as the clear coat on your car. Upol in the one that Bert uses (I read that he sands to 80 then sprays). On my last board I used the upol that comes in spray cans. I won’t do that next time. My finish turned out very inconsistant - In places it looked beautiful and places it turned out like grunt. Next time I’ll try the version that requires a spray gun. Additionally the stuff smells up the garage and must be EXTREMELY unhealthy.

Anybody have a better solution?

Systemthree UPOL comes in colors requires HVLP sprayer

washes out with water safer than some of the automotive ones…

Do you happen to have a link to the product?

Here you go… Warning it can be expensive $100/gallon it’s what CMP and JIP uses

http://www.systemthree.com/p_wr_lpu.asp

i use an airless sprayer… the colors are tricky, many light coats is the trick… the clears are pretty straight forward… like they say the finish only comes out as good as the prep… if using it like a gloss i spary on a few coats let it dry hand sand the whole thing and they respray… it seems there is not really a (healthy) shortcut to a nice gloss finish…

Hey guys,

Considering using 2pac?

Its VERY poisonous… Guys who use it regularly don’t live long.

In Australia there are very tight laws regarding its use, including a licence required, extraction system with serious filters and one of those respirators which has a pump.

If you still want to go there, don’t get busted…

Look for an alternative.

Speedneedle

With the way that the upol smell I couldn’t imagine that it is good for you. The smell stayed in my garage for at least and hour or two. Its the first thing I’ve don in surfboard building that my wife negatively commented on (a big plus of using RR epoxy)

i agree with speedneedle… 2pac is not something that you want to be spraying in your garage. the system3 stuff is water born, not non toxic by any means but dosn’t really smell to bad… i wait for a windy day with no one else home.

ps. killer job on the latest board pete…

That’s the smell of isocyanates poisioning your body and destroying your lungs. If you are spraying that crap, regular respirators are not good enough, you need the forced-air type.
