I know its been said that weights are a crutch. But it doesn’t seem to slow him down much… He also did this, trying to demonstrate his best technique, not expecting to be ripped for not paying enough attention to economy of movements…and he does do 99% of the work with the power planer. I learned a lot from this guy.
I have no idea what all those pencil lines are before he starts on the rail, though. Never done that myself.
(Maybe that’s why his rails come out even & mine look like I was drinking.)
Oh yeah - it is Bolinas. So at 3:10, watch for a couple guys who appear in the back of the shaping bay drinking beers. And John pounds his own at 5:55 or so
Yeah man. Its a good life.
Kudos to JMoe for photography & editing. Another friend with a lot of talent.
I’m just the hack buddy who hangs around these guys…
Don’t wanna turn this into a Bo thread…but that’s a good photo for my collection, thanks Lava.
These are a bit older…

1915

Btw, I grew up in the white cabin that’s the highest & 4th from the right building in the 1910 photo. At least, that’s where mom lived & I spent my weekends & learned to surf.
My parents have a friend who lived in Bolinas. Elizabeth Garsonnin, she was married to Jerry Mander. I heard she recently sold the house though. My mom visited once for a couple weeks, said it was a really nice place.
…too much faster to appreciate good or have an opinion
but I wonder that in every one of these clips, the shaper “suppose” that the bottom of the blank has perfect panels in boths sides of the stringer… I mean, they start to mow foam without measure, checking, etc nuthin
normally the blanks dont come perfect, so if you start to shaping in that way, is more difficult to obtain proper bottoms or that the shape fit perfectly well in the GLASS stands (happens a lot in shortboards, cause the longboards due the weight “adapts” better to leveled racks)
-also, for me is impossible to shape without eyes protection
Gary Young is my new hero,I would love to see his new stuff.XPS foam bamboo skins foam rails?I need to look him up next time I visit my brother in Kona.
I don’t know, he seems to “double handle” some things. I’m sure I saw him use his templates to mark the outline twice. Not to mention he seemed to screen his rails many times, more than was necessary I thought.
Good video!! I thought it was good idea rechecking the outline shape with the template on the bottom. Looks like he surformed right to it. Cool outline!!!
John actually uses his templates to draw those pencil lines for rail bands. On the bottom, it was only about 1/4 to 1/2" in from the original line. The time-lapse does move pretty fast, but Jereme knew if it was much over 6 minutes people would get bored & not watch the whole thing…just like the time between commercials on TV.
Jerry Mander was pretty famouns around Bo, back in the day, Johan. I’ll ask at the Post Office if he’s still in town. I still get my mail there, so they know me & I’ll get the truth.
