Another industry loss: Hastings Plastics

I was bummed to find out that Hastings Plastics in Santa Monica, California is going out of business.
I have been buying my tints, fillers, resin and glass from them for years.
They’ve been there for 60+ years.
And to be forced to close by the people’s republic of Santa Monica ant the LAMTA to make way for a light rail system that really should go down the middle of Olympic Blvd. Instead to save a few trees they are forcing a bunch od longtime businesses along Colorado St. to close.
Great idea in a bad economy.

THE HOPE AND CHANGE MINDSET AT WORK.    Isn't it grand?

It’s a shame when a temporary jobs creation effort that may or may not be “shovel ready” beats out established businesses that may have already been operating at full employment for decades.

If your CA light rail line is anything like our NJ light rail line, prepare to be overbilled and underwhelmed. Sorry for companies forced to the wayside in the name of “progress”.

Well amazingly this mass transit project predates “hope and change”. It started with the “Thousand Points of Light”.

Are they just closing up shop as opposed to moving to a new location?

I'm guessing a union is involved...

I think Hastings having to close for the light rail is more of a possibility, was in there talking to them about it just the other day.

1934 Chicago Tribune

Hastings plastics was The Place for garage kooks like me to get tints

Now I’ll have to steal them from Ray

I suppose Richard Blum will be a consultant on this project, like the last one LA did.  To the tune of $100,000 a month I think it was.  That is;  if his wife Senator Dianne Feinstein has anything to say about it.  And behind closed doors she most definitly will!

Theyre putting in a light rail system here on the Gold Coast in Queensland,

Only problem is that it covers flat ground which is easier on bicycle,

theres a really good bus service already covering the same area,

and you need a car once you get off the system to go anywhere.

there must be money changing hands to get it approved.

Didnt they see th MONOrail epispde on The Simpsons ?

As usual,

APES WITH ROCKETS

This is shocking news if they truly shut down. Hasting's does/did a great deal of trade with Hollywood studios and countless artists and artisans. Their business is/was a fairly broad base but I'm sure it has slowed due to the economy like everyone else. I'll bet they re-locate and continue business. They have been the go-to failsafe for my whole life. If you can't find it nearby, Hasting's will have it. If they shut down it will be a major loss.

THANK YOU SOVIET MONICA.

PS. Two handed wipe???? No visuals please.

IMO, there are no sacred cows when it comes to light rail expansion in Los Angeles.

burn it all down and build me a monorail.

I heard they're relocating the Acrylic Deptartment as Santa Monica Plastics. Sometime in December or Jan 1st 2012. The guys in the store seemed confident about that. We'll see I guess. I know I need acrylic on the Westside. Hope it's true.

Bruce in the store said it's relocating as SANTA MONICA PLASTICS and still in Santa Monica. Yippe!!! Hope it's true.

Hastings re-located under a new name - Santa Monica Plastics, just up the street on Colorado Ave, 2834 to be exact, just after Stewart. I stopped by and saw Bruce. He had some plastic stock on hand, trans white, 1/8th, he cut it,  and we talked, everything seemed hunky dory with him. Cool Beans.

Hastings closed and re-opened as Santa Monica Plastics, on Colorado Ave still.

Great news!!!
