Another Quattro ?

I know, yet another quad question. Yes, there is a multitude of info out there, but it’s a minefield and can’t quite find the answers I’m after, so was hoping the good people on here might be able to help a brother out.

I live on a tropical island and all the waves here are extemly shallow, heavy and hollow with the take offs being real quick and critical.

I have a few boards that have 5 fin set ups, but only been riding them as thrusters so far. I have a good range of thruster set fins from big to small, so all flat foil.

I threw in some smaller side fins into the rears to ride as a quad the other day and loved the speed and hold in the face and in the barrel, especially taking off in the keg. Although it did feel a bit tracky, even thou we don’t end up doing much turning here.

So my questions are;

  1. Would ordering in some 80/20 rears help give the ride a more ‘flowy’ feel, if you catch my drift? Not sure how these would relate to hold, turning etc.

  2. I’m riding futures and my rears are 3/4" boxes, so wondering if the quad rears come in 1/2 or 3/4"?

  3. Do quad rears have a different cant angle, as the thruster side fins I’m using are probably the stock standard 6 degrees?

Ordering in things here is a bit of a hassle as they have to go through a few countries to get here and can take a while, so kinda want to make sure I’m buying right for me.

Other info that may aid in forming a clearer picture

Most of my boards rears are set 2" from the rail or a touch less.

I’m largerly a front foot surfer, I’m heavy and look for power in turns; fancy free.

Be stoked on any pointers or entail.

Cheers.

Double foils on rears, and…

2)quad rears are normally for 1/2" boxes

3)it differs for some fins but  overall the 3/4" have around 6-8° cant and the 1/2" quad rears have around 2-4° cant

Hey Kingphin,

What size board and tail?. On one of my boards which is a 5’11 shortboard with round tail, and I ride it in more bowly , steep a little overhead,  I converged on the josh mulcoy quad setup. I spent about a month switching out rears fromts, etc… until I felt I could turn and still get drive. Overall I found out for the rears less rake was better.

Also if your rear boxes are 3/4" they sell inserts so you can put in 1/2" fins.

Double up

Thanks Jason. Thought that might be the case with 1/2 inch boxes. Should have really sussed that out before putting them in. Kinda assumed I could just play around with my thruster fins = my bad. Might have to get some of those inserts. Are they just strips of plastic, 1/4’ thick? And, yeah standard 6 degree cant on rears might explain the tracky ‘on train tracks’ feel.

My 5 finners are;

5’11 coffin tail - widesh

6’2 round tail

6’5 pin tail

Cheers

There is nothing special about the inserts, I bought them from fiberglass hawaii pretty cheap. I used to have a 6’10 Rawson that had 3/4" boxes in the back. I don’t need them anymore, and never ended up using them. If you can get regular mail easy, pm me your address and I will mail you the two I have.

Also for reference I weigh about 180lbs.

Jason

Thanks Jason, appreciated mate. Will be sure to get back to you if I don’t come up trumps with something. Might actually get some fins off fiberglass Hawaii, awesome international service.

So sorry my next question, was wondering if someone could please point me in the direction of decent trailers that may suit me. I’m not sure if you can buy just the trailers by themselves.

I’m mostly riding Luke Egan fins in my thruster at the mo, so roughly size 7. Pretty hard to find info on cant angles and even foils and general dimensions of some fins through online stores.

Would 2 degrees for my futures trailers be about right? And 80/20 foils be what I’m after.

Any pointers, links or help appreciated.

Cheers

Been looking at these.  These are the biggest I can find. The futures look quite rakey for a quad rear.

Both are 50/50 foil and can’t find anything on can’t angles.  Is there anything else out there for someone 90kegs? 80/20? Anyone know the can’t angles on these and what I should possibly be looking for? Be stoked on any help.  Cheers

Nope?

For what it is worth, I have a set of the futures qd2 4.0 rears. I tried them in a really wide tailed 5’10 and a roundtailed 5’11. They felt really locked in, and down the line sort of fins. I didn’t like them.   For the wide tailed board, I ended up using controllers, and the 5’11 as mentioned before. Futures has a composite less rake more standup fin for under $30. In the picture it is the white ones. You can see similar design to the Mulcoy rears, and both are foiled on the inside.

Also pick up a nubster, futures sells them a little cheaper than van sol. Liked them when the rear fins are spaced close to the rails.

I like the idea of this thread, maybe should try to start a quad poll, where people say their weight, board size, picture of fin cluster on tail, and what fins worked for them.

Also, I live on a tropical island, and surf some quick reef breaks, although mainly around head high. Nothing intense like the videos from Tahiti though:)

Hopefully someone with some more experience will weigh in.

Good Luck,

Jason

Thanks so much Jason.  Your contribution and input has been great and informative.  Might have to give the kinetiks a go although I have no real idea of their cant our what 50/50 foils will translate to in what I’m after.  Guess they may work in my favour in my rears being closer to the stringer maybe.  Saw some other futures with the inside foils but was thinking they might not be big enough. Yeah is a real mission trying to piece together something. A hit list thread would be good idea on what magic combos people have found for themselves and the waves they surf.  I’m  still largely lost. Intending on getting a knubster type fin,  was even thinking of bubuzzing down one of my thruster centre fins.  By

the way,  although in another country I'm  not to far from you.
