We surfed the pass just near the Mayeva marina, its the last pass going round the island in a clockwize direction before you get to the airport.
The locals are very friendly, they allways shake hands with you when you paddle into the line up.
We allways surfed from dawn to about 8:30 in the morning, leaving as all the local crowd start to roll up.
By mid morning its quite crowded with lots boogie boards and shortboards.
Its a right hander, paddle tuck in and go down the line,if its about headheight there is not a lot of time for up and down its just try to make it out the end.
Most days we saw about 3 boards broken each day ,make sure you take a strong one and a spare.Try not to leave too much of yourself on the reef,I tried a off the lip and missed the result was a nasty reef rash on my ass
something i havnt done for years!
Enjoy some good tubes and respect the locals its there island and they get a lot of visiters.
My advice to you is to call Moana David (Vetea David Brother) to take you around for the days you want to surf. He is a really cool guy, and would pick you up at your hotel and take you where the good waves are. If you don’t do that, you will need to look for somebody that has a speedboat to take you to the good spots, since most spots are outer reefs that are quite far to paddle to, and if you paddle, after surfing sucks to paddle back. So, my advice is call Moana, he has a boat, he has the place wired, and you just have to surf…
I also say you need a boat! I took a 8ft inflatable with a 3 hp outboard on the plane and then just put boat on top of rent a car. Worked out great even took it to Moorea with me. Otherwise hitch a ride. The paddle is 45 min each way at some spots. Outer islands are the real deal also…*
Moana David’s operation is very professional and has catered to many travelling pro surfers and therefore realises the requirement of travelling surfers with limited time. A speedboat is used to whisk you to the outer reefs. Moana has a truck with a boat trailer for travelling down the coast and then launching the speedboat. Sometimes you will visit the island of Moorea (2 hours ferry) if he feels the surf will be OK.
There are two surf seasons in Tahiti and these are from November to March (Summer) and April to October (Winter). The swells from the north come during the summer season and are often 8ft when Hawaii is 15ft. Winter is generated from big southerly storms from Antarctica and New Zealand. If you want to have an amazing Tahiti Surf Experience then this is it with Moana David.
I’ll make a 6’6" shortboard as a prize. Can’t promise i’ll have it ready by Feb 5th coz i’m on shift work at the moment but I’m sure the winner of it won’t mind a week or so of a delay.
