Got this from a buddy of mine a few months ago who acquired it from an older gentleman who he has since lost touch with. The board is 9’ 1" by about 22.5" at it’s widest point. 50/50 rails, nose rocker is moderate, has 6393 stamped near the tail, looks like an added leash loop glassed on, and a fin set-up that looks like the old Weber Wonderbolt system except the bolt/screw is at the front of the fin instead of the rear-near the tail. It looks as though the fin box may have been repaired or replaced, as you may be able to see in the photos, but they did a pretty damn good job. The rest of the board appears all original with only a few minor dings and almost no pressure dings. There is the one obvious repaired ding on the stringer up by the nose, but other than that the board is near perfect. Was wondering if any one may know the approximate age of the board. Thanks in advance for your help and expertise!
My Guess is 1967 just before the massive switch to short boards.
artz is right in the ballpark. '67 is the most probable year of origin, given the box fin and large, colorful lam it has. Con did use a system very similar to Weber’s, though only for a very short time. The box and fin are original, and it looks like the box was repaired (badly). At the very oldest, it might be from late 66. But I’m inclined to think 1967 is more likely.
Thanks for the info, artz and sammyA.
The front mount wonderbolt was common on 66-67 cons. The repair looks like just a little glob of resin on the top. For these boxes the foam was routed into the shaped blank then the glass was sliced when laminating, a couple of layers thrown in then a PVA coated jig was inserted. The jig was divided in the center and it was expanded similar tho a shoe stretcher. The result was like you see on yours, pretty rough. Cracks like the ones at the front your box were standard.
I had the same shape in 10’, had the same reverse Stage3 fin but in black. No stringer just a cats eye High Density black foam center. Had a wacky see-saw looking rocker that worked great. Does yours have that rocker?
I only have Weber experiences.
We had the TRAF, early 67 (Ha! Morey’s fart) in the 2nd generation performer.
The first were the lam’d "box “with poly fin lam’d in.
A good hit from the back of the “hatchet fin” dislodged my first one.
Sazzam "the wonder bolt retrofit was born…
Great info! Now that’s some rocker!! No, mine has very slight rocker in the tail and more in the nose. I’ll have to get a shot of it. Love that board though.
Looks like a fun beast!
