Aloha Kash!
Here’s some pics of the glued blank.
aloha all,
the above blank was cut from a block 6" thick x 24.5"wide x 8’. Fiberglass hawaii is now bringing in these blocks. Can anyone ID this eps block. The density is unknown, until I call FGH. I know how it feels…very dense!
I had to set my hotwire cutter as if I was cutting with a 52" wide bow.
The below pictures are 1# (cheap stuff)
Rocker profile made from 6’3"H template
more to come, I’ll be milling a 12’3" rocker template this weekend. Uncle D to join.
A Hui Hou…
manoa
how much were those blue blanks from Fiberglass Hawaii?
And what do you cut your templates from look like 1/2" ply to meand how smooth do you make the edges for the wire to run on? do you use something for the wire to glide on? I’ve been using 1/8" MDF but it seems to thin and frail…
gotta drop by one day and say hello to you and uncle D…
but being a Ewa Beach resident I don’t like driving into town any more than I have to for work.
Seem like traffic is 24 by 7 on Fort Weaver…
Aloha Oneula,
Profile rocker in pics above (cheap 3/4" plywood). I don’t recommend them, I had lots of left over material from other projects.
I use only wood as my rocker profile (3/4"). I like to round the outside edge and keep inside edge at 90 degree. why? I bend my wire over the outside edge, to me? this leaves a cleaner cut. I don’t cover the edges with anything, I like the idea of seeing smoke off the wood. If I see the wood smoking, that means I’m moving to slow. Another small trick, I hotwire vertically and not on a table. why? I like the idea of gravity doing the moving/cutting. Cutting vertically lets the bow fall at a good pace and even. Very little pressure is needed.
The blue blank in the above pictures belongs to Jason Kashiwai. I don’t remember what he paid for it.
The glue we used for Kash’s blank was similar to gorilla glue…but better. It drys white and not yellow like gorilla glue. Made by system3 (FGH stocks this glue). Kash will be bring the CNC milled blank over tomorrow nite. I’ll take pics and post asap.
Go Kash!
Manoa:
Great job and very professional looking. Those blanks are 2.31bs and go for $98 a block. Look forward to this weekend. Shall I call Mike Casey too?
Aloha,
D
I beleive the Elmer’s Polyurethane glue is supposed to dry cleared as well…
I like the vertical cutting idea
I’ve seem some gravity feeding block table that do the same thing.
The wire is in a fixed position as it rides over the guides and the block slides through the wire by the force of gravity.
Like the hotwire folks say.
always let the heat do the work
You and JJP must the true EPS hotwire kings of Oahu nowadays at least until CMP does his annual once a year blank cut…
neat stuff as always.
especially that blue EPS…
but $98 for one blank(6" thick) is kind of expensive
hot off the aps2000,
Mahalo Kash for stopping buy and showing me the almost finished blank.
Mahalo J.Troy for lots of useful tips, esp regarding this type of blank. I will post more pics after final glass job.
