Any Oahu Swaylockers want to share/rent workspace?

I’ve been itching to start shaping boards again, but I have nowhere to work. I shaped 4 boards in the past year, all on the lanai of my old condo. As you can imagine, it made a huge mess, and there’s no way my girlfriend would stand for that at our new condo. So I was wondering if anybody on Oahu would mind sharing or renting their shaping room with me? Also, if anyone has a big wire cutter for EPS that perhaps I could use sometime that would be a great help too!

Thanks!

Call Otis Schaper. I think he might have a room for rent… 221-5876

Hey, what happened to my post. PM Manoa (Jon). He has a great shaping room and a hotwire cutter. We are currently finishing up two fishing boards. We like to get together and build boards.

Aloha Dennis and Joe,

awesome to meet new swaylockers. My shaping room is open. Need to finish my fishboard first.

Aloha all,

here’s the original post regarding satorisurf’s harsh claims!

check the date and my response…open when I finish my fishboard.

no room for rent but i would be happy to build you a hot wire frame for a case of beer… you’ll just need to get a car battery charger or whathave you to power it up…

pm me…

Thanks JJP, I’ve found a place to rent and I’ve built a hotwire cutter. Ordered a variac to power it, hopefully it will work well. Now I just have to find some wire, may end up using fishing leader wire, I haven’t had time yet to look around and see what I can get my hands on here in Hawaii. Thanks for your offer though!

Look, Manoa, you can keep dragging this out if you want to, but you might as well just drop it. Your change of heart didn’t affect me that much. Like most people on this forum, I’m a pretty resourceful guy, and I’ve already found a good place to build my boards. I’ve built my tools with the help of posts on this forum, and am nearly ready to get started. You keep bringing up that you told me you had to finish your board before I could use your space, and you know what? That was always fine with me, I would never want to encroach on your space when you were using it. I just wanted to meet you because you seemed like a nice guy. I also wanted to see what you were working on because it looked like a cool project. So it did annoy me when you acted so enthusiastic about the whole thing when we first talked, then kept cancelling or not answering your phone when I was supposed to come check out your shop. But you know what? You and I can keep going back and forth about this and it isn’t going to accomplish anything. So just drop it, I don’t need your shop and thanks for your offer to let me use it again, but considering what has transpired I wouldn’t be comfortable with that.

Howzit Satoisurf. I think you can use piano string wire for a hot cutter if you can't find any leader wire. But living in hawaii leader wire is probably easier to find, just go to a fishing supply store.Aloha,Kokua
Howzit satorisurf, Time to let it go, Manoa was kind enough to find you a blank and you should be happy about that. As a local you know how important children are in Hawaii and Manoa has changed his priorities due to the impending birth of his child. Take into consideration the fact that he was going to let you use his shop before he changed his mind about priorities and a child is way more important than a board, at least in my thinking. Be a good guy and congratulate him on having a new baby. The fact that he will not be working on boards for about 6 months just shows how important the heath of his child means to him and his wife. Manoa sounds like the kind of person I would want as a friend.Aloha,Kokua

Jon is one of the nicest and most generous guys that I know. He has that “old school” feel about community and team. He will give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. I am about 15 years older than him but I really enjoy his company. He has a great mind that is always exploring different ideas and alternatives. His enthusiasm is contagious and for me he is a positive breath of fresh air. We create a lot of synergy together. He has the fresh ideas and I play the role of older brother and try to keep us both grounded.

Jon has a wonderful understanding wife and they are both looking forward to their child in May. It’s time for Jon to transfer his energy and enthusiasm into being a father. I have no doubt that he will be a great and very involved father. I know that his family and friends are very much looking forward to the birth of his child. We are all excited and will support this family in anyway that we can.

Santori, I wish you had a chance to really get to know Jon and his generosity. I know that he provided you with some good leads already. We still can help you shape and even glass your board in my garage. Please understand that sometimes priorities change.

Aloha,

D

You guys are right, please see my post in Manoa’s fishboard layup thread.

I have many lesson to be learned

Communication is the key to success!

No hard/harsh feelings towards satorisurf, its a new year and lets make the best of it.

Regarding hotwire, just to give you a heads up…no dealer/store/shop will stock Ni-chrome wire (resistance wire) locally. The past 8 years, I have ordered my wire through online stores (model airplane stores) and Ni-chrome wire is not cheap.

I also hear that stainless steel wire may work, have no experience with it. Car battery works, but with no control of heat (probably will heat your wire to hot then break). Best cut is with controlled heat for the proper bow (distance). you want ONE clean cut Hotwire your blanks in open air (outside), you may not smell the eps burning, but its toxic.

Get an “old” toaster oven…and rip da bugga apart. controlled heat, plus lots of hotwire in one toaster oven. Use those parts to make a custom hotwire setup. Lots of toaster ovens at swap meets and probably very cheap. A good setup will last a life time, esp if you use good wire.

With all thats been said, my hotwire setup is available for use. Drop me a PM if you need to borrow stuff.

aloha all,

great things come when confronted by small detours.

P.S. we are having a BOY!!!

Howzit Manoa, The heads up about a toaster oven is great and very inovative. Is it possible that solid steel guitar strings would work if the temperature is controled. You may be well on your way to Herb Spitzer status.Aloha,Kokua

Jason-

Welcome to Swaylocks. I have seen and ridden a couple of your boards. They’re very nice. Good luck with the hotwire!

aloha jason,

your shaping over the years…A+, give me a call or stop by my home. I can help. I’m waiting for this company in the mainland, I want to order large PU blocks (any density).

Welcome to swaylocks!

eh U da guy dat shaped the multihull-twin nosed surfboard?

No Manoa

that’s Jeff Alexander at HIC or Rex and his famously surfing mag labeled “picklefork”

I believe Jason was the main man at T&C before leaving on his own and leaving them with only Pang in the stable…

Funny how many ex-T&C shapers there are out there nowadays Craig just seems to eat through them like ground termites. Remember Ned McMahon, Garduque, Johnson, Casey even Aipa…

hi manoa,

thanks for all the help on the hot wiring. the blank turned out insane.

thanks for the use of your tools, knowledge and time.

your hawaiian generosity will come back to you ten folds.

if i can help you with any projects in the future, you can call me anytime.

mahalos-
