All my noseriders have up rails with a sort of bevel under the nose. Ive seen many recommendations for the down rail in the nose to create lift due to suction etc and wanted to experiment with it on my next board. If you can post some pics so I can get an idea about how hard the rail are turned down thatd be awesome. Thanks
Yeah I could send you several; but I’m out on walk about and won’t be home or in my shaping bay for a few weeks.
That’ll be great for future reference. Are you guys putting the rail down as far as in this pic?
Beautiful work and just what i was looking for!
How thick in the nose if you dont mind me asking?
How thick? I do not measure the nose thickness…I just make it “just right” when shaping it. Got to learn to trust your eye…“Look at the board, look at the board”
Thanks for the photos Ace! Now I have a hankering for a 9’6"…
PS I really like that board.
great work, thanks for the link.
attempt to post a pic of Ace’s board
I just realized Ive seen your boards all over SD how funny. I looked through a lot of your boards and noticed all your cali noseriders have the uprail with the bevel under it. Whats the reason for this in local San Diego conditions?
I like the “Drop nose” BUT it has a dendency to sort of “pearl” on take off. It pulls up and does not pearl but you have to get used to it. Especially on flatter entry noseriers. The Cal Noserider is a board I want to be very versatile and please a lot of riders. User friendly. If you count all the Eatons, South Coast, Rockys, Bings and a few others I have shaped for I see my boards everywhere too. Always nice to see someone get a good ride on something you had a hand in making.
Do you personally find they are better on the nose once they get moving?
Better? Is red better than blue? You can not look at just one aspect of a surfboard and say that is what makes it work or not. The board in the pictures has a whole lot going on other than just the drop nose. I have found that the amount of or lack of concave in the nose bottom vs drop nose or not has a great impact on noseriding style. I guess I like the deep I mean DEEP noseriding for dummies the least…Too slow for the waves I surf. BUT some guys want a slow on the nose board to maximise tip time in slower waves. Guys used to complain if the bords were too fast and out ran slow waves on the other coast. I also like round bottom noses becuase you can roll em through sections on the nose. PARRALLEL STANCE tip time.
I remember when I first saw that posted. I thought the nose was the tail and the tail was the nose, as it was refined I was blown away at how much the tail was turned up and the nose turned down. Then I remembered that John Peck talked about his boards having a turned down nose.
