Any such thing as a "tint" substitute?

Let’s say I have my ding repair kit but no brown tint. Nearest supply store is hours away. Any suggestions?

Instant Coffee. The granular type.

Also Testers Model Paint.

Testors will work in a pinch for epoxy resin? Nice.

NOPE! No idea then! Sorry, we don’t do epoxy.

Troy

a little granular instant coffee dissolved in a little acetone. Add the resulting liquid to your resin drop by drop until you have something a little lighter than the color you want to copy.

do not make this mix up in a coffee cup if you get absent minded. I actually stumbled across this trick when I had to use a used paper coffee cup to do a repair - the faint brown tint the resin had was a nice match for a suntanned board.

hope that’s of use.

Doc,

Sorry I didn’t give you credit on the coffee thing. I couldn’t remember if it was you or Herb that told us about it long ago. That was around the time I think Herb was talking about using election posters as squeegees and diapers as ding fill. I guess the coffee thing is good for Epoxy also then huh?

Hi Troy,

Heh- no credit deserved , unless it’s to Lady Luck or Invention’s mom, Ms. Necessity.

The trick is to dissolve it in something compatible with your resin, and acetone works okay, though I’d use as little acetone as possible so it doesn’t mess with the resin consistency - and similarly, paint store color tints ( which are compatible with both oil-base paints and water-base latexes) have worked well for me on both epoxy work and with polyester resins.

Now, me, I like postcards or index cards as quick, dirty and disposable squeegees. More credit to Ms Necessity on those…

best regards
