so the next board on my list is the one stated above, but i can't decide what dimensions i want to use..... i'm looking for something that will work well in average to good surf. repeat, this is not going to be my "shitty, flat day board". i want it to be 6'5" in length and decently thick (3" or so). Got any suggestions? I'm a rather large guy at 6'8" and 245lbs. Haha. Probably a lot different than anyone else on here, but the question remains.... some pics would be great too. thanks!
NOBODY????
OK, I will bite… This is 6’6", but you could easily resize.
I was gonna suggest the MR single fin that ...Lost offers, but I like Balsa's better!
6'8" on a 6'5", 245lb on 3"............do you catch many waves on that? Also good day surfing where? El Portal or El Salvador. Sunset Beach HI, or Sunset Beach Long Beach?
Are you young...are you old... The only thing I know about you is that you resemble a skinny version of Andre The Giant..
right off the bat I'd think you'd do well on a 7-7'6".....why 6'5" is that a magic number or some kind of formula?
if you’re physically competent, 6’5" x 3" x 21-22" are solid dims on a full outlined board for someone in our weight category…can paddle and catch, can also duck dive.
I really like these:

Good Karma: http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&gbv=2&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=good+karma+tudo
Geoff McCoys: http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&gbv=2&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=geoff+mccoy+nugget (nugget, stumpy, potbelly, whathaveyou…these are a different animal than the previous two)
The rocker and foil that Balsa posted above is pretty strong, though you might want to push your max thickness up a bit to compensate for your height and overall weight…keep the tail and rails foiled so you can really dig in.
PS. regarding glassing, you’re pretty close to Ken at Segway Composites in Colton…he’s got EPS foam, hotwire, CNC cutter and glassing services. To someone’s point on the previous thread, you might even be able to make friends and watch his guy do a couple boards.
PPS. watch this video 10 times…there are some very subtle yet powerful techniques illustrated: http://vimeo.com/9063662
PPPS. in the LA area you can get materials from Fiberglass Services in Gardena, Foam-EZ in Westchester, Spearz over in the valley or call Graphite Master and see if their truck comes anywhere near you.
i'm 23 years old, and i decent shape.... the reason i'm going for a 6'5" is i had a MSF G2 that was 6'10" and the thing was a boat. impossible to surf unless it was overhead. my standard board is 6'8", 2 1/2" thick, and about 20" wide.... a 7' would be fun, but i'd only ride it on the biggest and best of days. i surf in huntington beach/newport/malibu. that board up at the top looks good. i'm putting my wide point forward to suit my heavy front foot. thanks for the input guys.
ohhh… good wave board … nvm
Balsa, the board in the photo seems like it has a narrower tail than the drawing. The narrower tail would be a good thing.
I like that board that you’re holding. Reminds me of the boards I rode many years ago, except they were all less than 6’.
Balsa,
What size surfer do you reccomend your 6’6’’ for?
Beautiful board by the way.
Love the plain bottom and the deck colour and pin looks is perfect also.
good work mate
Gui’s single (balsa) is a good one for most people.
Since you are young (compared to me) and fit, you
should be able to duck dive a board like this. You surf
all my spots, so a single will work ok in these waves.
You will need to shape in a bit of vee, and a single
concave will help under your front foot. If you are glassing
at home, I would suggest that you start out with UV resin
so you have plenty of time to fix up the hard parts like the nose,
tail, laps, etc. Glassing is easier today than it was with UV.
Some corrections:
FoamEZ is in Westminster, off the 405. If you are nearer
Fullerton, it is a bit further away.
SPEARZ is out of business.
…hello Balsa,
that outline looks great, very smooth and with proper balance
I like to shape my foils more tapered out than yours
my question is regarding that low entry rocker…
for what is really intended this board?
thanks
Not sure it’s actually narrower, maybe the photo makes it look like it. Thickness, on the other hand, was a little more than what was originally intended, if I remember well. I tried to have a very neutral outline (wide point is almost dead center) as this kind of outline tends to work in a wide variety of conditions.
That board was shaped for a guy who rides mainly up north (Brittany) where waves are a bit slower and less hollow (of course, there are exceptions) than, say, the Basque coast or the Landes area. Low entry rocker is for gaining speed easily, especially since the tail is not too wide. Now, that’s my take on it, not sure it is universal truth either…
The guy I shaped it for was about 6’ in height and 165/170 in weight but average ability and not surfing as regularly as he would like to. So, a bit of “meat” was wanted for help.
Thanks to all of you for your interest and kind comments.
