Any Washington DC area shapers

that’s great to hear from all of yall. looks like we have a potential for a meet up surf one day.

Alex, where in the west end are you? (if you dont mind me asking) I’m out here too. I was gonna do the same thing with blanks from WRV.

I live in Drouin Hill (River road as far as you can go and still be in Henrico County- we back up to Tuckahoe Swamp). Summer Saturdays we leave for vA Bch well before dawn.

never would have geussed that there were other shapers in the vicinity. Hey maybe a landlocked swaylock meeting might be in order? Kyle, woodstock about 30 min from balt and 45 minutes from DC

oh yea BTW, i would be willing to share cost on all of this(resin foam glass) i surf in NJ.

i definitely think a sways family outing to the beach is in order. i don’t know about you guys but i could use some saltwater and sun on my skin. now all we need is a swell and someone to make the call on where to go.

sweet, I’m backing up to the swamp as well, just a bit further north. I’m off lauderdale and church.

ok i am up if i cn get my parents permission to go on a road trip.

Has anyone found a good place for stringers? Colonial Hardwoods in Springfield, VA, I’m about to go there and pick up a piece of basswood. They have just about everything. I’m gonna try to get some offcuts to make fins out of too.

Anyone up for an epoxy order this weekend? I’m getting the 1.5 Gallon set for myself.

The Cellofoam option sounds like the best to me. Sfoam will ship up to 8 blanks, but it will cost $64.86 just to ship it to Wilmington. Plus the $25 box fee.

I think a road trip sounds like a great idea. I’ve got to finish this board by the end of January, maybe after that? I just can’t wait for spring. Although lately the weather has been pretty mild. I’ve been glassing dings outside every time the temp hits above 60.

Just got back from Colonial Hardwoods. They milled a 1" thick piece of basswood for me, cut it into 2 pieces and then planed down to 1/4". Only $32. Not a bad deal, it took like 20 minutes. Really nice guys too.

Found a source for paulownia wood in Hagerstown, MD… now I’m starting to run amok, sorry.

my parents agreed to let me plant a few paulownia trees in our yard so in 7 years they will be ready to be cut down and shaped into boards

Exotic Lumer in annapolis has just about every kind of wood you can imagine at decent prices. I have been going there to get wood for fins and stringers and all. best part is the owner is from J-Bay in south africa, super nice guy talked to him for two hours or so the first time i went in there. Also if you are a carpenter this is the place for making some absolutely beautiful cabinets. It is actually about 2 miles west of the Bay bridge so if any of you are heading down to the beach its worth a look. There is also an antique mall right by there that sells very nice old tools at good prices. (like block planes and quality surforms, gotta look hard though)

Now you’re thinking! If I tried that here the homeowners association would have a fit…

I got my marine plywood from there - they were great! And they let me sort thru stacks of mahogany for about 1.5 hours. They have a shop in Gathersburg too - here is their web site: http://www.exoticlumberinc.com/. Its more fun to go to Annapolis though :>

Rachel - thanks for the other wood lead.

There is also a place in Frederick - the guys there were ok, but were not very interested in the whole surfboard building thing…

Jay,

I did get some weird looks when I explained what I needed the basswood for, but they were really willing to help out. They also carried balsa, but in 3’ lengths only. I had gone there 2 weeks ago looking around and explained my situation (it was right before new years so they weren’t milling anything), and then I went back today and they remembered me. So I guess there’s something to say for being the only shaper in your particular postal district.

And here is the update some of us were waiting for:

I FINALLY got thru to Gary from cellofoam this am - here is the deal:

No Minimum order if you pick it up (located in Fredericksburg, VA in this case)

They will cut it from a 3’ x 4’ x 16’ block

It takes 1 week from time of order before its ready

You can call their 800 number (see cellofoam for the office near you…) and place the order direct

They take credit cards

I asked for a quote on a block of 3’ x 2’ x 10’

     2lb = $208

     3lb = $331

The EPS sales guy’s name is Gary (for the Fredericksburg, VA + east coast up to Maine) & his phone number is 540-295-8864.

I’ll be out of touch for a week or so, so don’t wait on me if you’re going to order something. Good Luck!

Ok well seems this has died what kind of food does everyone like maybe we can all meet in DC or somewhere for food and talk about this and then maybe not just talk the talk but walk also. Oh and jamie i just read your opening thing again, yea i am sitting on about 2 acres, plus my dad is getting a shed to store files from his office as well as the lawn mower so i am gonna try and comandeer some room to shape.

I’m game to meet up somewhere, but i’m going to be out of town thursday-sunday this week, then next thurs-sat in Philly, and next Sunday-following friday in Cleveland, all for work. Sometime during the week next week, or first week of feb. will work for me, but you guys don’t need to go by my schedule to meet up. if i can’t make it someone can fill me in when i get back to town. Most weekdays i am around falls church or annandale, so if anyone’s in the area we can grab lunch. pm for my phone # or shoot me an email

Has anyone heard of the Luna Grill in Shirlington? They have great food and they’re right outside DC. It belongs to a friend of mine’s dad. It’s sort of All-American meets gourmet. During the week it shouldn’t be too busy. I’m game for the first week of February if anyone else is interested.

Also, is anyone a Surfrider member? I’m part of the DC Chapter and we’re having a meeting on February 14th. We meet at a coffee shop in Clarendon, if anyone wants to stop by we could talk about boards afterwards.

I had been meaning to see if there was a chapter up here. good to know there is. who should i contact to join?

I’m ok with Luna Grill first week of Feb.

i am in a wee bit of a pickle. well it looks like my quater grades will pis of my mom, german physics and math(phyisics i understand concept but can’t memorize all the forumlas) plus they do own the car and i highly doubt they would let me drive to VA solo, let alone if they thought i was meeting strangers from the web. hmm. rachel luna grill sounds pretty good looked at their site. Presidents day weekend anyone?
