Any Washington DC area shapers

Take the metro to the “library” or some such bullshit.

If you come by one of the meetings, you’re as good as joined. If you want to recieve e-mail updates, just send one to . The website is http://www.surfrider.org/capitol for info. We tend to get around 10-15 people showing up at meetings.

See if you can convince your parents. Call it a “study session” or a “learning experience.” You’ve got to spin it.

i am am member of the Jersey chapter as that is where i ride.

can’t drive til april, so I won’t be able to make much…at all really until then and i can comandeer a car…

do ya’ll know of any campsites like on the eastern shore or something? its rather central, don’t really know about the surf though. that would be a cool meet up, meet up friday night, camp out, surf saturday, some of sunday, and get back for work and school and crap. if camping is ya’lls thing…

riderofwaves, we got a shed last year for our “lawnmower” and instantly my mom took it over with plant pots and shovels and other junk, plus a massive lawnmower, but I am slowly taking out all the stuff that I dont think fits my ‘shaping shed’. if ya’ll arent planning on putting electricity in it, its definately something you should spring for, running an extension cord over 500’ to a heater and a light (not to mention tools) isn’t particuarly safe or easy.

Assateague island is the camping spot, you can camp right next to the carpark or go in as deep as you want by either hiking or 4x4. i haven’t surfed there yet, but it picks up good swell, just have to time the wind.

i’ve also been wanting to surf the cove at cape may, jersey on the next big NE. Long lefts and clean on north wind, evidently there are some campsites close there also.

any weekend there are waves i am up for camping out, particularly after i am done with all this bullshit travel.

anyone up for a real adventure, i’m taking a week off in march and headed south for an undeveloped island with two right points and a sick beachbreak, and it’s within a days drive from DC. Any takers?

shoot, that would be freakin’ sweet. too bad i just cant ditch school for a week… tell me how it goes, that’s right up my alley, maybe in the summer…

unfortuantly i am going to look at colleges over spring break i would so go if i could though

Hi all, I’m a Baltimorean that just recently moved up here from Virginia Beach. Good to know there are some surfers relatively close. I’m not in a position to shape anything anytime soon and it would be tough for me to meet up in DC but I got to know, what is this undeveloped island you are talking about ChasingLefts? That sounds awesome. A day’s drive from DC could be anywhere though depending on how far you drive. Don’t hold out man!

Arlington, VA here.

I’ve been looking for someone to go in on some EPS blanks with me. I am in the extended planning phase for an EPS/balsa burger. I am not exactly sure what materials I am going to go with and have no experience with a vacuum, but it sounds like fun.

I was thinking 1 lb EPS w/ vent. 3/16" balsa, and 3 oz S glass inner and outer if I can find some for a reasonable price. For the perimeter rails i was thing of using alternating strips of balsa and basswood for a little extra spring.

A friend and i also have a couple PU restoration projects and ding repairs that we have been waiting for warmer weather to work on. A heatable workspace could give us a jumpstart on those projects.

Awesome that swaylocks has a DC metro contingent. Me and a few of the DC surfiders just got back from PR a couple days ago and man was it pumping.

Where in PR did you stay? I just talked to a friend who lives in Rincon, said Tres was solid for a few days. I’m jealous.

I don’t have a heated workspace either, i have a bunch of outdoor buildings/barns that i can use, but nothing with electric.

Attached is the pic of sick right point #1, but i’m holding the location to myself…for now.

Darnestown, MD here. Not an active shaper but have long been contemplating it. I surf between NJ and FL. I am amazed at how many other DC people are here!

We stayed in Rincon although ended up doing most of our surfing around Aguadilla. Tres was really good, but a 1 1/2 mile paddle to get out there. There was a big jetty/sea wall that was macking. Almost every set wave was a makable barrel if you were willing to drop in right in front of the rocks (not I). Insane waves.

For this new secret spot, do you need to take a boat there?

Okay, I know the spot is somewhere off of South Carolina. Hmmmmmm. Any more clues or did you say and show too much already.

The tubes breaking in front of the rocks is called Gas Chambers, and is one of the sickest barrels in PR. Also, for Tres, sometimes it’s quicker to paddle out at my friends front gate and let the current on a big swell sweep you right out to the break. He lives at Dogmans, but it’s still a hell of a paddle out no matter which way you go.

As for spot x, glad to see you are on top of your game, i was wondering how long it would take someone to figure it out from that sat photo. It isn’t some big secret island, it’s just undeveloped, privately owned, and has no easy access, therefore most people don’t know there’s waves, and even fewer make the venture. and yes, there are lots of little islands off of SC with good wave potential, many of which are undeveloped. i know where most of the good setups are, but it’s so inconsistant that it’s hard to score them now that i don’t live there anymore. Most require a boat or kayak and some determination, but this particular picture is within 2 miles paddling from my old house.

if anyone is seriously interested in going, i have lots of vacation saved up and a flexible schedule. now just waiting for swell and wind.

it’s over i know yourisland you gave me geographic coordinates.

looks fun huh?

I figured it was somewhere in SC but I got too distracted looking at my own break down there. Chris Mauro was right, Google maps will be the end of the secret spot.

That looks like a great wave. You said something about it being a 2-mile paddle and a private island? Does it require a boat to access it? My grandmother’s contractor has a pretty big boat and surfs too, I’m sure I could convince him to let us borrow it or take us there himself. I’ll be in SC in April for spring break and possibly sooner if I can find a couple days off of school. I think a week would be taking senior skip day too far.

Google definitely is the end of secret spots, but most places take care of themselves alright, and places that are easy to surf are always going to be crowded.

This island is close enough to paddle a longboard, paddleboard, kayak to, but i wouldn’t swim it or paddle a shortboard because of the distance and little sharks. The rest of the breaks along the coastal islands you need a boat, fortunately for me two of my best friends work for Sea Fox boats and both just bought brand new fishing boats, so i’ve got that part covered. the only thing i am wondering is if anyone would call the coast guard or cops because i am camping on the island. there are one or two that are public but they are shadowed by the outer islands.

You may get lucky with a swell in April, but sometimes there aren’t many late winter storms and it goes flat in march.

I’m assuming that since its HS spring break you are heading to myrtle beach? cause there’s no surf in myrtle beach

I’ve never really tried exploring around the islands before, but it sounds like there are a lot of options. My uncle’s got a kayak I could borrow, I’ll have to try that.

Yeah, fortunately I’m not going to Mrtyle Beach, as yeah, there’s no surf. I’m going down to the Isle of Palms. The surf’s not spectacular there either, but it’s not crowded.

I’ve seen some pretty insane flat spells in March. The Atlantic looked like a pond. And most of the time it sucks until the day I have to leave, and then I get to drive away watching a couple guys get good 3-4 ft waves. Oh well, free place to stay with indoor plumbing, I’m not complaining.

I don’t think anyone would call the coast guard or the cops if they found you camping there. You may find yourself staring down the barrel of a shotgun, but that’s about it. I’d just have a 6-pack lying around if they find you out. If I’ve learned anything from reading Surfer, it’s that you can solve most territorial issues with beer.

haha,

‘IM GONNA KILL YOU!’

‘wanna beer?’

haha, I can see it now

anyways, that island sounds kinda like coughmasonborocough, but I may not even be in the right state.
