Any Washington DC area shapers

yeah, that was a stupid guess.

anyways, the place you are talking about (ill leave it up to everybody else to find it for themselves!) a friend of mine just moved down there and I might be stopping in sometime this summer. where do you paddle off from?

If you get lucky on IOP and there’s NE swell either head south to Sullivans and look around a bit, or up to the north end of iop where it’s gated, naturally they gated the end of the island where theres surf.

definitely not Mase, but there’s fun too, if a little shorter paddle.

I used to paddle out of my backyard and down the rivers aways to the ocean, hang a left, walk a mile and you can’t miss it. there’s better ways, but i was conserving gas by riding the tide out in the morning and back in at night, didn’t exactly have money then.

My grandmother lives in the part of IOP that’s gated, and they don’t really get good surf there. There’s a sandbar that stretches out and around the point, and puts all the surf way out when the tide is low. During high tide it barely breaks. Best is a hundred or so yards down, I prefer 56th St, where it curves around the cove when the tide is coming in.

I haven’t been able to find anywhere on Sullivans, but I haven’t been looking very hard.

Sullivans is only good on a big NE, so most likely you haven’t seen it good. i’ve only caught it right once, but there were probably a lot of days that it might have been good and i just didn’t make the drive. if you get a swell while you’re there, go south all the way to the harbor, park, and walk north until you find a wave. the deep water of the shipping channel makes it real powerful and hollow, but if your paddling arms aren’t good, you’ll end up in the middle of the harbor dodging boats waiting for the coast guard to come get you, and ticket you, but the barrels are worth it if you get one.

when you go take a skateboard or a good book, most likely will be flat, but you never know. the skateparks are always breaking though

smokeless fire and natural shelters are smarter than bring along a REI catalog. attach your SB to the back of the kayak and tow it along.

If it’s flat most of the time I’ll drive down to Folly and check that out. And if there aren’t any waves, at least there are a couple of shops where you can ogle boards until you’re dreaming of pinlines. Unless it’s really, really, really flat though, I’ll just pull out a longboard and surf it. I mean, I hardly ever get to go to the beach, I’m not going to waste this whitewater.

I’m about to go hotcoat some dings. I’m really loving this weather.

it couldn’t be any nicer for the end of Jan. I quit working early to go skate a few hours.

and Folly is strangely blessed that it is rarely ever completely flat. usually something at least for bodysurfing or a log.

When it got completely flat we used to tie ski ropes to the back of a friends golf cart and pull each other around on the skateboards.

Jamie, I may just have to try that. My cousins will be down there too, and we’ve run out of ways to get in trouble.

When you were living down there did you ever know Adam Fowler? He taught me how to surf many years ago, and I haven’t seen him around in awhile. He was such a nice guy. I think I paid for one lesson and he came and went surfing with me a couple days a week when I was down there. I think he and a friend started a shaping company, but I lost the business card a long time ago. I remember he was so stoked when he found a '60s Dewey Weber at a garage sale.

I never knew Adam, but i do know a Dan Fowler, but i don’t have any idea if they are related. Which company did they start? Is he part of the Family? it’s more likely i would recognize a face in the water than a name.

Not sure if they’re related, but probably. Adam lives over on Sullivan, and he may have started the business with his brother. I haven’t heard from him in about 3 years, I was just wondering how he was doing.

Just wanted to let everyone know i’m back from the frozen-lakeside-armpit of America, sunny Cleveland, Ohio.

If anyone still wants to get together for a lunch/board chat, weekend surf trip, or whatever else just shoot me a holler.

Also, I’ll definitely be at the DC surfrider thing in a few weeks.

Hope everyone’s chickens are cluckin’

J.

Jamie,

I’ll be at the Surfrider meeting. I’m just about finished shaping my first board. I’ve got to shape the rails tonight, but that’s it. Then I’m ordering all the epoxy and fiberglass. I have another stringer left over, so I’d still be interested in going in on a block of EPS with anybody.

Lunch/board talk could be fun too.

Rachel

Congrats on the first board. Let us know how it turns out, also pics if you have them. I’d offer my digi camera if needed but i left it in a hotel in Philly and supposedly they never found it. Bastards…

I think i might be holding off on jumping into shaping, as i doubt i will be in nova for long enough to make the investment worth it, and i can’t exactly go backpacking with a planer and a block of eps

My schedule is completely fluid, i can be anywhere in the area i need most of the time, so if you want to grab lunch just let me know, but I usually try to get my work done and be outside of the beltway by 3pm cause traffic isn’t good for my temperament.

Hope the rails and glass job turn out well

J.
