any way to make a a simple fin?

newbie wanting to experiment.

The archives here are chock full of info.

The most basic method is to lay out layers of fiberglass cloth, soak them in lam resin, and squeegee out the air bubbles. Let it dry. This process creates toxic fumes, so do it in a well-ventilated area.

Make a template of the desired fin. Cut it out of the sheet.

Foil it by grinding/sanding the fiberglass plate. This process creates a LOT of dust, so consider where you want to do it carefully.

The details are more than covered in the archives, so try a search.

pop rivit a piece of plastic pipe to the bottom make sure to point it in the right direction…ambrose… fake your draws

Stick your foot over the side of the board… actually wait, that wouldn’t be a simple fin, that’d be an organic one. Best go with Ambrose’s solution.

Ha Ha! What does ‘fake your draws’ mean?

Jedisurfer, You can foil a piece of plywood and then coat it with resin. Roy

In the old west , like tombstone or Dodge city or any cowboy movie of the genre’…the first guy to draw his gun was the one ,if he survived ,that got hung for murder.the drill was to make the other guy draw his colt 45 revolver 1st then shoot em in self defense. In neighborhoods accross america children in their off time studing cow boy folkways and mores.would pretend to ’ draw down’ on everybody every where on evry topic in every form and recieving a spontaenous kneejerk eaction from the sibling taunted the call would ring out Fake your draws…ambrose… also morphed to fake your drawers, today replaced by PSYCHE ,you did well your knee only went up one sentnce

Go to the thread on the vintage Morey-Pope and view the picture of the fin. To make the fin I tried to match the base of the broken fin the you see in the front of the new fin. I tried to match the material but no one knew what it was, so I came as close as I could and used polypropline. Cut the material and grind away. The base of my fin was 3/4 thick, but if you fin is going into a conventional box just match the width of the slot.

Use an old fin and apply auto body Bondo. Shape it. Surf it. Sand it off and start over.
