OK, I shaped a copy of my old circa-1982 thruster that had a center fin box and glassed on, curved “turbo” side fins.
Anybody know of anyplace to find these now (glass on curved “turbos”)? Or am I just going to have to make them myself…
Note, I don’t mean turbo lockbox fins, or turbo-tunnel fins, or the FCS G-CRVs. Just the really old glass on style, they are curved base-to-tip, not front-to-rear, and the curve is very smooth, unlike the G-CRV which is more a hook shape. (there is a drawing of them in Orbelian’s Essential Surfing if anybody’s interested).
Howzit Keith, I think you may have to make you own set. Not that hard to do, just find a big enough tube or curved surface that you can lay up a fin plate on and that will let the resin/glass release from. Remember seeing a picture of it done a few years ago here so it should be in the archives, good luck.Aloha,Kokua
Thanks for the Big Island tips. Kokua is correct. A large diameter PVC pipe, coated with PVA, or some other release agent would most likely meet your needs.
where is leeD when you need him?.. I think I read somewhere where he said he used a blowtorch and regular glass-on type fins to make these type of fins in the 70’s or something to that affect…
Using a domed trashcan lid will get you both inner and vertical concaves for a ultra maxi “turbo” style fin…
these are all great replies, but what I was really hoping for was…“hmm I know I have a pair of those stashed away in the back of my shop”
ha ha.
Actually I have a curved clock glass I’ve been saving for just such an occasion, and I have pva and tons of glass scraps… just not enough time. (if only my friends would stop bringing me all their ding repairs…)
Here’s a time saver: Laminate to the outer diameter of your Toyota 4-runner, it’s the perfect curve, and you can run errands to the store and what not while you let it kick off! No need for release agent, just burn out in your drive way when you get home…walk across the street and pull the glass shard out of that pesky neighbors dog. Hey maybe even kill two birds with one stone, I mean Fin.
I know this guy with an old beat up trifin that sounds just like yours…kinda brown with two red strips. One side is about 1/2 inch wider than the other. He could just pop the old pair off and use them on a new board…You know, hypothetically speaking, that is.
