anyone been to wavepark resort (mentawais)?

apologies for the travel post, but can't seem to find reviews elsewhere and thought some folks on here might have feedback:

has anyone been to the wavepark resort in the mentawais?  thinking about a trip--looking to hear feedback firsthand.

thanks in advance!

No, but I did see some pics a guy at work got in the ments, and he was at a resort ( looked 5 star ! ). Not sure if its wavepark. F*ck me there are some nice waves there. From the looks of it there are waves for different levels of surfers, though mostly experienced intermediate plus. Some of them looked fun at a smallish size, but the same break at 6-8' looked undie staining hehe. For me anyway.

If you've got the coin its good to go up the top on a tour to get perfect **less** crowded waves.  If you go to the main easy to get to spots now like basically the whole of Bali or Lakey peak/Desert point there are gangs of psyco Brazlians and Hawaiians dominating line ups with violence.  Also the whole of Europe is surfing now, even countries like Norway, Sweden, Italy, Israel are surfing and travelling. Even land locked people want to surf now too like Germany (not really land locked but) , Austria, Switzerland, these people can be quite dangers out in critical surf and tend to be less knowledgeable on surf etiquette, ie your in the tube and they will be shitting themselves, paddling for the shoulder causing collisions.

Indonesian people surf very well now too due to the perfect waves and I believe their physical build, they localise spots, good for them though I would too if I grew up there.  The bukit peninsula, Lagundry Bay are all heavily localised, at least at bingin you can pay the locals to give you waves? Cool! ..Lakey’s has the Lakey Peak Bra Boys!? Guess they saw the Bra Boys movie and miss interpreted surf violence as being cool?

Sorry this is another downer post but Indo has changed in the last 10 years big time, the last 5 years have been ridiculous and it’s not as cheap as it was that’s for sure.  10 years ago was good, 20 would have been epic (I wasn’t there) 30 would have been a surfers paradise.

I don’t really know why everyone froths out on Changgu that hard, it is a full on circus, the water is brown, the beach is covered in rubbish, effluent goes straight into the surf and its hard to have a session without coping a plastic bag in the face or paddling past someone’s morning steamer.

Go to Wave Park if you’ve got the coin (I don't know where it is? I'm guessing south Sipura?), even through all the egotistical legends getting around if you get a 6ft+ donker at somewhere like riffles you’ll remember it for the rest of you life.  Plus if it gets over 6ft most of the ‘I’m a frigen legends’ who were hassling, dropping in and acting like pigs at 3ft seem to mysteriously hide out in there bedrooms and can't be found.

Marsh hasn’t been there but he thinks that there are lots of
Europeans, Beerfroth hasn’t been there either but he thinks
that it can be big and scary??? WTF???
Here’s the scoop; I have not stayed in the camp, would not
as there are few spots around it that are good. I have surfed
Hideaways and a couple of other spots around there. If you want a
camp, there are better choices, like “Kandui Resort” not “villa”.
Boats are also the option for the same price, like the Tengerri.
The Ments are a large group of islands with a lot of different
breaks, some really challenging at size. If you are looking for
cheap, go to Bali. If you are looking for adventure & epic waves,
save your money and get a boat trip. If you are a goofyfoot, you
are in heaven. If not, practice, practice… LOL. Best time of my
life, if I had the coin, would go back in a flash. Know this right that
at XXoh would make me look like Slater… Hope this helps,
BKB

Okay, weʻve heard coin mentioned a couple of times; just HOW MUCH coin are we talking; $ 2K, 4K, 6K?; If Iʻm going I gotta start budgeting so lets  get down to some hard figures; where else can you find uncrowded, good waves at a camp that is not CHEAP but affordable; not looking for no fleabag accomodations; thinking about maybe Salani in Samoa but would like a few more spots to choose from…

Tavarua is most probably easier to get into now since the government has taken away their exclusivity and anyone can now surf cloud break , restaurants etc , don’t know for sure but I heard the prices have dropped , great surf ( if its not too big ) the wife and I had a great time there (17 years ago ) .There are other surf resorts in Fiji heard good reports on all of them .  A friend has been to Corky Carrols place in Mexico a couple of times , rates it very highly , had great surf and fun with Corky . Hope this helps .

There is a surf site called   www.wavescape.co.za   they have ads for surf resort type accommodations at Jeffries , take a wetsuit , and if its big , some brass balls . Hope this helps.

A good bet to find out what a place is really like is to search youtube, (enter the spot & "surf").  The resort promos are good, but the tourist videos are sometimes more revealing.  Several dozen for where you asking about.  A real meatgrinder on the inside section at one place that I wouldn't attempt without a having personal surgeon along.

sickdog.

howzit gb,I have surfed the spot where Corky has his place quite a few times back when it was still a secret left and was hard to find if you didn't know whereit was. Now they have cabanas to rent and another restaurant and I hear it is crowded now. It is one of the funnest waves I have surfed but by far not the best since it is a racy and long wave but not tubular. You can ride it right up to the beach and step off and order a lobster from the local eating place and it used to cost a whole $6 a tail.If you ever get a chance I would say surf the place since you will have a great time. Aloha,Kokua

Great waves in that part of indo. One problem tho, " CROWDS"

If on the other hand, you like surfing with lots of new friends ? GO !!

Silverbak

Not so crowded first time we went there …remember

You were in the barrel at Lance’s Left when the third boat arrived in the chain !!! What is there 100 boats now.

We traded them the waves for some beer …

I saw that there is a surf camp there now
