That had to be the strangest surf trip article I’ve ever read. What (other than surfing) were those guys doing there? After a few paragraphs I had to skip to the back of the mag to see if it was fiction. I guess it wasn’t.
I saw it. Have not read it yet.
I have to admit, seeing photos of surfers standing around their campfire with their automatic weapons turns me off a bit. Adventure, maybe, but not the kind I’m into.
Hey J,
combat surf huh?
thats just too hardcore…
how do the waves look?
D
how do the waves look?
Well, I guess I’d describe them as not worth it. “It” being ridiculous travel to get to Somalia, being placed under house arrest, gun fights, car chases, paying bribes… Like I mentioned, it seemed like fiction but the editors notes at the back of the magazine implied that it was at least possible that the story was true. Did I mention the gunfights?
SURFTECH DOWN- upcoming surf flick?
I often devour the surfers journal with relish and concentrated attention.
this issue is a hard one to love
strife is not my favored desert
Somalia?
I also read the magazine backwards
that means I read the editorial page and the gossip first
the pictures are always cool
the somalia art…tickle didnt get me up to read it… maybe someday
…it was so way off I had to look who signed the editorial page that had a picture of the Illustrious HERBIE and no words in the copy…
pezman aint on the job …scott hewlett ?..is he from newport?
…ambrose…?
the tone of the magazine’s presentation is changing
in the hands of this alternative editor…
is it for the best?
And I thought SECOND THOUGHTS was crazy. Those guys are either out of their minds or have a death wish. Great article.
TSJ is to me the only surf magazine really worth reading at all, although I’m a little worried about their new 6-issue year and it seems that Pezman isn’t quite as hands-on as he used to be. The article about Brazil was the only Journal article since I’ve been a reader that I haven’t liked at all, even though the writer came at it from a different angle it just seemed to be another cookie cutter, over-it, sponsored pro surf trip. Maybe I’ll give it another chance but I had a hard time with it. Then again I don’t know anything about publishing or writing, but I hope they keep on the track they’ve been on the past 8 or 9 years!
