Anyone ever strip and reshape a windsurf board?

Thanks Stevo, check back next week I will have some progress pics up. You can learn from my mistakes (there will be mistakes).

I like the swirl Tom. Looks like marble!

We have done three from old sailboards now.  Sure, there is a little stuffing around in filling up the mast/footstrap holes, and the foam can be a bit soft if you are working down from a 4" thick blank, but they have turned out fine (and you can’t argue with the $20 starting price!!).

More importantly, they have been a nice cheap starting point for learners like me and my son to ‘start’ shaping on.  I have no worries if I stuff up a cheap old sailboard, but would be a bit more hesitant if I was starting with a $120 blank.

well done damo and tommorth !

good to see I'm not the only recycler / stripper and reshaper here

15 of my 17 boards were "strip and reshapes"  ...a few have been posted on here , over the years ....

this

....was the last thread that I posted,  on the strip and reshape process .

As you said , Tom ..."getting something useful " , from an old p.o.s. original ...it IS a satisfying feeling , and your grom looks stoked , Damo !

.....it's MEANT to be fun , after all !!

  cheers guys !

I finally got to dive into stripping the board this weekend. There was a raised piece of fiberglass that ran the apex of the rail all the way around. I started by removing this with a chisel and hammer.

I ran the chisel all the way around the apex of the rail next.

Looks like there was a layer of plain weave and then a layer of mat fiberglass cloth. It was very thick and heavy.

The fiberglass around the nose came off pretty easy. There is no stringer and the foam is a pretty ugly brown.

A lot of foam came up with the glass on the tail area and rails towards the tail. I wasn't really that careful, i knew there was way more foam than I needed. I could see how doing this to a smaller board would be a big pain in the ass. I took the blade out of a hack saw to cut out the glass in the hole in the center of the board.

This is the final product. Anyone have any advice what to paint it with after I shape it? I am going to look through the archives too. Now I just have to decide what I want to make.

Here are some updated pictures. I finally got some time to work on it this weekend. The rough shape is 5’6"x21x3. Next I will probably fill the holes.

Paint it with Acrylics or Tempera paints. But with hole being filled in I would go with a solid opaque color in the hotcoat

I have some acrylic spray paint left from my last board. I think that is what I am going to use (white). Hopefully that will cover the seams where the holes are. If not you are saying I can tint the hotcoat? I will be using Suncure. Does that mean I will have to add Mkep to get it to kick?

Just found this at the local second hand store for 25 bucks, so I’ll be following you down the windsurf reshape road.  It’s 9’ x 22" x 6ish.  Have you glassed yours yet, bojangles?

Nice find almost looks to good to strip and reshape.

Artz, I feel the same way.  My original plan was actually to flip it, but after looking around craigslist at how much these boards go for used, it turns out I'd barely make any more money than a blank costs, so I'm just gunna have fun with it.  Its got a cool double stringer, but the box for the sail is smack in the middle of the two.  Im not sure if I should just leave it in there or cut it out and fill it with some foam.  Any advice?

Yeah that board looks like it is in WAY better shape than the one i stripped! Good find. I laminated mine over the weekend and it looks pretty good (considering what the foam looked like). I wish I would have not used the "great stuff" foam in a can to fill the holes. It came out lumpy and hard to sand because it is so soft. I used scrap foam to fill the sail holes and some epoxy and that worked great. I painted it white and sponged on some blue to cover up all the imperfections. I will take some pictures this weekend. Hopefully I will have time to give it the hot coat.

Here is a picture of the board after the hotcoat. The shape looks a bit off, but it is just the way the board is leaning. The other picture is of the tail marked off for the fin boxes. I ordered a probox template kit from Green Light, but the router bit that came with the kit is too big for my router. I will have to borrow one from a friend most likely (router)................so close to finishing.

Looks good, bojangles!  I stripped mine today and the foam underneath is niiiiiice :)  Ive only shaped crappy home insulation EPS before, so I’m pretty excited to try this stuff out.

Yeah that does look good! Have you decided what to shape yet?

I wanted to try and copy a 5’6" Pavel speed dialer my buddy has that I really like, but there isn’t enough width in the blank to pull it off, so I’m thinking I’m going to reshape this funky fish thing I picked up on craigslist a while back.  Its 5’8" x 20 x 2 1/8.  Fun and skatey, but since it’s so thin it paddles like garbage.  The plan is to beef it up to 2 3/4 so It’ll float a little better, and switch it from a tri fin to a 5 fin option.  I’m still not sure if I can fit the width of this one in either, but if I have to I guess I could glue some of the scrap foam on the edges where I need it???
