6 3/4 Cutting width would be nice for handshaping longboards. I wonder how hard it would be to adjust the front mechanism. I have looked all over to see one in a store they are all special order to which I would have to pay first.
It weighs about 30 lbs, is 20 inches long and cost about $650.
Weight is 15 pounds shipping weight is 33 aparently because the box is wood. Cost isn’t really an issue if its something that may make things even a bit more effecient. Aside from that my price would be closer to 400 so its really not that big of a dent if its modifiable. It obviously would be a bit overkill for railbands, but for handshaping bottoms it could cut your time by 25% I would guess.

I’ve got one, only used it for timber work though. It’s very powerfull, takes a big cut but is heaps heavy. You definately could use it, but I reckon it would be overkill. Mostly because of the extra weight, I think it would flatten out the rocker in the blank unless you carried some of the weight and that’d soon get tedious.
Cheers
Wow Multiple posts like crazy, Sorry.
You are probably right about the rocker. 15 pounds is alot but I was thinking it with the reduced amount of passes the work time would be generously cut down. All the makita stuff that is geared towards timber is way overbilt, but I mean that in a quality way.
The f30A is great I had one years back and it was stolen during a break in. They are a lot harder to come by over here as most are Non-Usa 220v models. I am always on the hunt for one but just have never come across one. I would never have guessed the F30A was only 9 pounds. that makes the Makite almost 40% heavier.
Being that Balsa’s F30A now resides with me, I can vouch for it as a great planer.
I use it for everything now, to the point that my Clark Hitachi got passed on to another shaper. That being said, pretty much everthing that I shape is wood, so it’s perfectly adapted to my use. Balsa, paulownia, poplar…hardwood stingers and details, knots… as long as the blades are sharp it’s a real pleasure to use.
