Anyone had experience with mold making for small fins, MVG etc???

Finally received a set of jewellers files off eBay…

$8, and they’re decent quality.

taking the square edges off the Aluminium triple points.

Polish and paint next.

Had a few minutes this afternoon to smooth it out and give it a coat of paint.

I had an idea to increase the efficiency of the setup by thickening the foil at the bottom half of the fin while keeping the tip thin.

Hopefully the shape will develop a vortex of a larger fin from the base. It’s not the sort of idea that would work on a standard size fin but for these small fins its a triple increase in thickness at the base and bottom half of the fins.

I’ll give a few more coats of blue and clear and then ship it off to Beerfan for a road test.

I wonder if its possible to make a canted set for a thruster ??

Beery, your ‘Finius’ is in the mail tomorrow.

Sweet mate! Will try it out and report

You should get it in an Express Post bag tomorrow, (Tuesday)

After the resin and paint work the hole may need to be enlarged.

Hey Colin,

I have a few questions about your fin mold please…

  1. What kind of resin did you use? Polyester or epoxy?

  2. Did you lay cloth in the mold or was it just straight resin?

  3. If you laid cloth in the mold, what kind of cloth did you use and how many layers?

  4. If you made the fin out of solid resin with no cloth, did you add a filler to the resin? If so, what kind of filler?

  5. Any ideas for how to make a mold for fins where the inside of the fin is convex like a Vector fin?

  6. How have your molded fins been holding up?

  7. How is the flex and snap compared to regular fins that have been laid up with resin and fiberglass cloth?

Thanks!

Old old thread, but how are you making these fins?!
Any chance of a brief run down?
Oh and I’ve seen the “not making fins thread” haha
This looks way ‘easier’

Hey!
Old thread, but any chance of a tutorial?!
Brief rundown on how you make the moulds and pour the fins…
Any help greatly appreciated!
Cheers
