…just wondering how many of you get to try out each other’s boards on a regular basis …
…compare rails , designs , fins , shapes …
that sort of thing ?
do many of you regularly get to surf with other 'Swaylockians ’ ??
If so … what have you learnt from each other during your prac [surfing] sessions ?
cheers !

One of the best things about shaping boards for your friends is getting to try two or three different boards in a single session. You really notice the little things. For example, a friend (who owns the shop we work in) and I both shaped two fish from the same blanks, but with subtle differences in rail thickness, foil and outline. Trading boards in a session lets you pick up on the effects of those differences, because the waves and the “vibe” are the same. On this one session, I felt a significant difference between the traditional down rails of a typical old school fish with the thinner, pinched rails of another - digging a nose rail on a turn is a lot easier with thinner rails.
That’s just one example. There’s so many more…
Riding similar boards with subtle differences on the same wave on the same day is the fastest way to learn the differences between design features… hands down. It’s one of the things shaping gives back to you.
thanks heaps mate !
anyone else ??

Yep surfed with a few swaylockians now and all we did was talk about swaylocks rather than board design.
good on you !
But, how did the boards go , compared to the ones you normally ride ? [Surfboards , not kiteboards , Chris !]
cheers !
