Just picked up a 1960’s Malibu brand pop out #1862 . I seen some go for over $1000 online so might be somewhat sought after? What counts is that I’m stoked on fixing her up and taking it out. I picked it up for $150 for 2 boards .the other a 70’s pretty darn clean 7’6" single fin signed “Clark” on the deck, but that’s another story. There’s not to much info out there and thought this would be a good place to post it! I did find this site and refer to year by the model number http://stokednboard.surfingheritage.org/pdf/Malibu_Plastics_Ca.pdf. Thought this was neat on the site at the bottom “We would like to express our thanks to Johnny Rice for his contributions to this profile If you have any information on this brand or the people involved, please contact the SnB Editor Andy Anderson.”
There were two different Malibu labels in the 60s. That one is made with a popout blank and a layer of glass. The stringer is fake. That’s why the bottom has a solid color. No real stringer. Just a strip of wood routed into the deck. Anyone who pays over $1000 for one is a sucker. They were crap when they were new, and now they’re old crap. I hope the other board you bought is worth at least $100, since that Mailbu is worth about 50, tops.
The other Malibu brand was even worse. Nothing more than cheap styrofoam with a paint job. No glass at all. The fin was removable and part of a fin/talblock thing that was inserted into a slot in the tail. They were easy to damage. You could bite into them (as Mickey Dora once did). A friend had one when we were kids and the tail was full of cuts from his toenails. That brand was the one with metal tube stringers embedded in the styrofoam. The board pictured above does not have metal tubes in it.
On second look, this pic doesn’t even show a fake stringer. It appears to be just a black stripe down the middle. No surprise, as many 60s popouts didn’t even have a a routed stringer. The blanks came with no wood at all.
Thanks for all the kind words! Does not look like any steel in lam or stringers or wood layer in foam. Here a link for you gene, not sure if it sold but theres another auction that sold one but no price listed.http://www.usvsa.com/auction/APViewItem.asp?ID=26
Hi Tom, the link shows that the auction closed over 1000 and it appears that someone actually bought it. It’s a cover up job on top of that which makes it totally worthless IMO. Now I’m looking for a small, harmless looking bug to eat. No potato bugs.
Yes. The styrofoam Malibus had metal tubes embedded in the foam when the blank was made. So you wouldn’t see them even if you had one of those. But, yours is the standard popout with no stringer, as I mentioned earlier.
A little further research tells me that Johnny Rice’s connection to that label was for a specific board they marketed with a totally different logo than the oval one on the popouts. So, the Malibu popouts have no real connection to Rice.
When forced to eat an insect I and other gourmets within my circle prefer the ladybug. Tasty and nutritious at the same time (especially the free range organic ones). Stay away from the commercial ones like you see in the pet food dept. at Kroger or Walmart.
Be glad you didn’t offer to eat crow. In that case you would have been totally fucked.
