I know theres a trick out there where you can do artwork to make it look like wood, wood panels etc. on a foam board. I saw it somewhere where they literally fling the paint on having the effect of knots in the wood. Does anybody know what Im talking about? Im looking to put some panels on a 9’3" as a wood look.
oh yeah you need a brush that is really frazzled
the one you threw away…
for the dry brush
to make the hard contrast grain
knot holes are the most fun…

I have a friend who does it for a living. Unless you are willing to practice for a few years, it won’t look like wood, but more like smeared paint.
Sorry.
I have done 100’s of Falsa Wood paint jobs on boards. There are some tricks and some tools yo will need. If you have some talent then I say go for it.
Tape off the board so that it will look like a Balsa wood glue up. Mix some yellow ocher acylic paint with while and a touch of raw umber. work on this until you are satisfied you have a color close to balsa wood. Spay the exposed part of the blank. Now take te basic color mix some darker and some in a lighter color. spray and use a sign painter brush. to give the appearance of wood grain. Over doing it will make it look like cheap paneling in mobil home. to ad some spotting use an old toth brush and lightly flick the brush with the darker mixed colors. Let dry and then spray a light clear coat. Next pull the tape and back tape repeat the process. Follow up with an adult beverage of your choice.
Now be humble you did not invent this process. Other great artist have shared with me and so I pass it on to others.

I spelled it right from memory...?**george Orwell said in an essay I resd in my short college exposure**
‘if you say it in french you get instant cred in the contemp culture’**

Fake finish books abound, start with the french spelling
sign painters have depth traditionally in this stuff
the depth of literature on this merde is IMENSE
they go on to painting stuff to look like marble

A life mission and study.
“Trompe l’oeil” Means litterally: “Fooling the eye”.
…Ever heard of anyone with a wood board wanting it to look like foam…???..
“…Ever heard of anyone with a wood board wanting it to look like foam…???..”
Actually yes. When foam became the big new thing wood boards were pigmented so you could not see the wood cause only a kook had a wood board.
That’s funny. I have done a few wood boards that I painted to look like foam. Just for the fun of it. The wood was a thin plywood, and not that attractive anyway.
Here’s one example. On this one, there was some problem with the wood finish, so I painted the wood white, then used a green tint in the resin. The rails and “stringers” are the actual wood, masked off. The green tint in the resin turned the wood a dark chocolate color.
On another one I actually tried to “speckle” the white to look like foam, using a light gray over white, spattered with a toothbrush. and a faux stringer painted on.
I figured they make foam boards to look like wood, why not the opposite? I like surprising people. Didn’t know anything about the history, but its pretty cool to know now, ha ha!
I’m a fan of trompe l’oeil, here’s a couple trompe l’oeil murals I painted a few years back…
BTW, in reference to the original question - there is a whole body of literature available on faux finish wood graining, a practice that is hundreds of years old. Here’s a link, and another. Another term to look up (google) is Faux Bois. You’ll have to find the methods most suitable for a surfboard, as furniture is the main subject, with architectural details a close second.
You can also do a forum search using the word Falsa.
Here’s a previous thread - http://www2.swaylocks.com/node/1016056 - Maybe Jim Philips or Roger Brucker or another of the masters here can offer some further guidance.
when I was musing in the water the other day
I remembered a story basa told me about
the day that gary zerilla was painting
a fine art piece on dicky’s new board
and he din’t like the way it was coming out.
He put it down on the grass and washed it out,
the color was water base perhaps tempra… ,
with a hose!
only to dry it out and do it over…
the trick of not painting too much paint on the foam
so the resin cant bond to the foam is the big concern.
… but such a straight forward >>>WASH IT OFF!
attitude was shocking to my narrow mind…
Basa din’t say it compromised the glass job…
go figure…
maybe blow the blank off with the compressor
without forcing water into the blank…
styrofoam gotta seal it first of course

just a thought…
