Asian Paulownia alternative

I believe there’s a light wood similar to Paulownia in Asia called something like ‘sunowa’ or something?

I’m trying to get Paulownia in Hong Kong but having trouble so I figure if I can find this Asian wood I heard about in Bali this might be easier.

Also… Any advise on getting the right bamboo veneer from taobao / China? I heard 1mm is stronger than fibre but I have to get the right woven stuff… And noticed what it’s called

Cheers

Paulownia is native to China and most of the world’s Paulownia still comes out of Asia.

You are just not looking in the right spot.

There’s a guy named John Peter who has been contatcting me through facebook. He is the Marketing Coordinator at Dongming Sanxin Wood Industry Co. Ltd. They sell Paulownia for surfboards.

Many thanks  I’ve sent some requests to see if they might be able to advise regards importing small amounts (1-2 boards) without a licence Still curious as to that that other wood was I forgot the name of… And also getting the right bamboo too. I was thinking also to corrugate bamboo fibre for a core but then this could be hard to sand

edit:

some pretty big minimum order quanitiies so far. I only want to make a couple of boards for myself… I could buy 5 cubic meters but then I have to pay for storage…

also they’ve ignored every time I ask about import to HK so they probably think it’s not possible without a license and want me to order and have it stuck at the border… I don’t trust them…

You might have better luck searching out cabinetmakers and boatyards who might be willing to sell you a few boards.

Is the other timber cryptomeria?

…seems that you want a veneer not planks.

Kiri is the wood similar to Paulownia.

Kiri is almost light as Balsa but lot more stronger.

Thanks, this is all good

were you thinking of sunova? it’s a brand of surfboard that uses sandwich/wood veneer construction
