ASymm #2

It's been about a year since I shaped my last board, which was ASymm #1. I finally decided it was time to try again and fix some of the problems that my first ASymm presented. And, well it's almost winter, so it's time to get in the shed again.

I decided to go with a toned down version of asymmetry as my last board was just a little TOO different rail to rail. I loved it frontside but really didn't like it backside. It was also more of a retro keel fish/quad fish shape, and I wanted something hi-performance to try out this winter.

PlusOne Shaper made me a board last summer that might be the best board I've ever had. I decided to try and make an ASymm variation of the Altered Mind Machine (below) he made me, with a round tail heelside and a nice hard square tail with a straighter rail frontside. He has created an insane bottom contour he calls the Mind Machine that I loosley based my bottom contours on, but I know there was no way I could replicate the complexity so my variation is quite toned down and somewhat different to account for my lack of abilities!

 The Altered Mind Machine with hi-tech build by PlusOne Shaper, 5'9" x 19" x 2 ?"

My board ended up being 5'9" x 19" x 2 1/2". The tail is about 1/2" narrower than the above board, but I went with similar fin pacements and 5 FCS Fusion fin boxes.

I decided to try FCS Fusion for the first time, and ran into a little problem...well, it was user error actually! I didn't route my boxes deep enough and the flange of the plugs located on the rails, all 4 quad boxes, are raised above the foam by about 1/16". I'm currently deciding how to address this before I glass the board. I've gotten some good ideas on how to fix this issue from Swaylockers on a seperate thread. I found that, so far, the Fusion install is as easy as it gets, except for my error of course, but I won't make that mistake again! ALWAYS CHECK YOUR WORK KIDS!

I'm planning on doing a three color opaque tint with a sanded gloss finish.

Here are pics of the fin install:

You can kinda see how the flange on the outer two boxes just peeks above the foam, while the center fin box is even/just below the foam.

Hi Entropy, Nice looking board! Looks like quite a bit more volume in the tail to my latest, also looks like you have not staggered the fins although that could just be the photo, id be interested to hear how it goes!

heres a tail pic of my one with fins further back and a little more on the rail on the toe side( goofy too), hopefully get it glassed soon so post some finished pictures.

Nice looking board! I did not offset my fins as I thought I did enough to change things up with the different rail lines and rocker. I kind of want to see how just that will affect how the board goes. Another reason for this is that my ASymm is 5'9", not 5'9"/5'7" for example, so I didnt want to move my fins around much. The fins are actually alittle asymmetrical as the rail line is different on each side, with the toe edge straighter through the tail, so the rail fins wil be slightly different from each other in relation to the stringer.

I'll post up more as I work more...thanks for the thoughts!

Almost ready to laminate the bottom...with a little help from my friends!

Thanks Plus One Shaper for all your help, I appreciate it greatly! George helped me fix the problem I created by not routing my boxes deep enough when I installed my FCS Fusions, documented on this thread: http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/fcs-fusion-finbox-instal-mistakehow-to-fix

I'm going to continue the build updates here, as the finbox problem is behind me now. But first some photos of the fix...

George going to town on the raised flanges of the Fusion finboxes with a pneumatic 2" disc. This definitely takes some practice, I probably would have cut the tail off with this tool! It worked great though, and I'm ready to glass!

The finished product.

4 out of the 5 boxes needed work...

2 sets of 4 oz football patches ready to go, 4 oz. clothe measured and cut...if only it was a little warmer! It was about 50 in my shed last night, so I decided to wait until this afternoon for the bottom lamination...more pics to follow.

Great looking board.  I would love to try it. Can you tell us more about the bottom?  Maybe put a straight edge across and shoot a few?  Many thx.

I like what you said about George Gall (PlusOne).  I give him a little extra credit because we are both engineers, but I am a big fan of his.  I am saving for another board from him.

Stoked it’s got you going forward again Rob!  Probably lamming that thing as I type this.  Greg,

I looked over Entropyfletch’s shape pretty well and it had some good lines on it, similar to yours

in the front.  I think yours is more aggressive in the back half, makes for good performance

when done right though.  Also very stoked on the interest in asymmetric boards, I’m definitely

getting more performance out of average waves, others are finding out what you did, recently

did an 8 footer for a longtime friend, he’s doing all right with it.

Just shipped 3 more A_Symms to Hawaii (members on this forum) so I will await their reactions,

oh plus my friend Joe Bauguess has one in the shipment (yes he did an asymmetric Mini

Simmons,)  so that’s four more.  Also just starting 4 more for some Trestles guys.

We are going into big wave season (I hope) and want to run a bigger wave asymmetric too.

One of the boards I sent to Oahu was kinda radical in design…

Talk soon,

George

Lammed both sides yesterday, cleaned up a few mistakes this morning, and just surfed some great waves for the last 2 hours in my backyard! I am definitely thankful today, for my family, friends, and to be lucky enough to live here in SD.

I gotta say, George is a great guy and a great shaper. He was busy working on  a huge oversized collection bin for the Salvation Army made out of foam and fiberglass when I got there, and he took the time to help me fix my finboxes and offer me a little advice on how to fine tune my shape.

Went for some pretty wild colors on ASymm #2! Ended up with a half opaque/half tint on the bottom going from lime green in the tail to bright blue to white in the nose, and a deep purple on the deck with a freelap…looks crazy! Weird board weird colors…More pics to come!

Update! ASymm #2 is almost ready to surf, hopefully will be finishing it up tonight for surf tomorrow morning. Ended up with a pretty unusual color scheme, kinda went with a messy punk rock scheme, with opaque/tint green to blue to white tail to nose on the bottom, with a deep purple deck with a freelap. This was my first Lam in about a year, and it didn't go completely as I planned, but a little extra cleanup and the board will turn out just fine. I kinda like it, it's like stream of consciousness glassing...

After hotcoast, with Communicated Agitation logo drawn in paint pen.

After glosscoat. Gonna gloss the deck this arvo then sand the bugger down tonight for surf manana!
