Asymmetrical Experimental

This concept has been festering in my brain since I started seeing the Ekstrom boards posted vis a vis the Hydrodynamica blog posts and videos.

The TSJ article crystallized the mission for me.

3lb density EPS, stringerless with a custom rocker from the foam maestro, Ken “airframe” Eber…with a rocker bed for the veneer attachment step.

Done a couple with the 2.5, been meaning to try this stuff. I like a board with more inertia…I think the denser EPS is the ticket…we’ll see how the extreme end of the spectrum pans out.

The outline comes from a combination of three different templates, my roundtail on the backhand, BKQ tail on the forehand and a nose template off another one of my favorites

Hey, guess what, when you lay your templates out on the bottom, make sure you REVERSE them…crisis narrowly averted. I’m sure Wouter would have a laugh!

the charcoal pencil line goes a little proud of the template and then the jigsaw cuts a little proud of that…it all gets cleaned up with a sanding block.

the jigsaw is a great choice here…I used to fk around with router bits on the template…was thinking about a hotwire, but the KISS method reigns supreme.

this one is going to get my standard bamboo treatment, laminated with Resin-X…probably 4 under, 4 over plus a patch for the deck and then single 4 plus a fin patch on the bottom.

going to set it up with three (or four) proboxes, quad setup on the backside (roundtail) rail and a Parmenter twin on the front side…might do two boxes on the front side so I can try quad/twinzer too, not sure though.

the goal is to get this and the metamorphosand done in time for Plaskett.

Beware folks, this board building state of mind is contagious,I’ve been sitting here plotting damn near the same type of build and now this thread pops up.What type of veneer will you be using?

assymetrical bottom shape too ???   rails gunna be the same on both sides...what other assymetries have you planned...like it alot..I did a few when I was a grom, and always planned on doing myself another, its on the 'to do ' list but thats a long list....keep the pics and posts coming please.....

it’s been classified as a disease…I may be able to go on disability.

going to use bamboo…still have a bunch leftover.

I was planning on just using a flat bottom, but using a down rail on the frontside with either a hard tuck or soft 50/50 on the backhand…the discussion about rail symmetry in the other thread has me in a state of analysis paralysis.

how the heck are you doing this?

"hmmm, i think i'll disassemble a log cabin and  resaw the wood for a compandsand, in my spare time i'll whip out a half dozen alais, some bellyboards and a couple handguns, while i'm at it, how 'bout an assymetrical"... on top of all that, a job, a family, and a budding film career (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1706767/) ... where are you finding time??? =)

looking forward to seeing your results... and living vicariously through you... =)

Tyler, I am still a bamboo guy, but I am now exploring how little I can use and still get the strength I want while minimizing weight.  I am using big arc shapes of bamboo on the deck and bottom near the rails.  My asym will follow this path.

Actually, I am building two boards.  Both 6-6 roundtails, but one is asym and the other not.  I’ll benchmark against the first to see how well I hit the mark.  I’d be willing to send to you to take to the sways event if you will send it back.  Hoping to finish this week.

BTW, it is a goofy Asym, so that might not work for you.  and about 20.75 wide by 6-6.

Hopefully when your done I can get around to building mine and tag it along to this thread if you dont mind.I was going to skin the deck of mine with bamboo also over 2# eps, stringerless.I cant afford fins and boxes at the moment so I thought aboutmaking an asymmetrical finless.Have you thought about using 2 different rocker templates when hotwiring your blank…asymmetrical rockers?

you’re now on auto-snake mode…I’m going to sit on top of you all weekend.

hahaha

  1. telecommuter

  2. stopped chonging

  3. major life drama…shop time clears head

  4. best wife ever

PS. I also built an awesome adjustable hot wire this weekend so I can cleanly peel rails off a shaped board for compsanding … just to rub it in a bit. ; )

no pics of carls but here is one of mayhems

Here’s another similar one from Rusty. It looked like it was from the 80s based on the lams.

ha ha ha, right on

Do it! I had been thinking of doing it for the past 3-4 years, and finally made one this past May. Most fun board I've had in ages.

got the lights and stands out, vac setup and good to go

rough wonky bands…I block the nose and tail areas out by hand

having a really hard time balancing out the thickness in spots, especially the tail. the deck profile I had Ken cut on this one was a little funky.

I’ve got a slight S in the centerline thickness…thin nose that curves up in to some girth under the chest and then planed out some thickness in the tail.

the tail is giving me a headache…I think I’ve got what I want on the front side, but stressed that the backhand side is still a little too thick…since it ends prematurely relative to the foil of the blank there’s a lot of meat there.

laying up my bamboo panel now with some scrap cloth on the +/-45` bias underneath…with probably trim and bag tonight or tomorrow once I’m happy with the deck…

looking nice! ... i envy your man-cave... exposed studs, bare cement, pipes coming through the walls... very cool

meh…I need to finish it and put up some green or blue painted walls…

flattery does not get you off the list, btw.

ha ha, yah, i know i've got it coming =)

i was thinking about a hotwire for cutting the rails off... what do you think about one that's set up with 2 wires. wire B about 1/4" away from and parallel to wire A. they both get powered up and wire A runs against the template and wire B makes a second cut. when you're done, you've cut your rails off and you have a full template for cutting your rail material...

finished turning the rails

used strap fiberglass on the +/- 45` bias and laminated it to the bottom of the veneer then sanded it all down

should have done a better job of sanding down the edges since it sits a little more proud, especially on the denser eps

waiting for new batch of Resin-X to show up to complete the lam.

I borked the skin bagging…used backer glass but didn’t sand the edges down before bagging it on.

This is the downside of rushing steps when I find a window of opportunity to execute…gotta put a list of steps on the wall to make sure I don’t miss steps…this one in particular often gets forgotten.

this yielded some bumps along the rail…I also took the bamboo pretty low on the rail, much lower than usual so this probably also contributed to the issue in addition to the thicker veneer due to backing glass.

anywho…I sanded down the rails as best I could…I got in to the bamboo a bit so I’ll probably have to do some pinlining or something to clean it up (or just leave it)

laminated the bottom yesterday…working on the top today.

kind of lagged working with the resin-x so I didn’t get it all pulled super clean on the deck while I was racing through the laps.

I used minimal laps…in the tail the deck lam does not lap to the bottom…just letting it hang straight down.

this is 3lb EPS with bamboo that has an inner patchwork of 4oz on a +/-45` bias…I am only doing single 4 top and bottom to see how the foam holds up in the tail section where knees and feet get it.

I like the 3lb…but it doesn’t screen super well…you really have to go at it. I think my chalkline is still visible in spots.
