Asymmetrical fins history

Hey does anybody know the history behind the first asymmetrical fins for surfboards.

I myself started making them for the Lis fish type boards back in 1972

after learning about air foils back in a aero space composites class back in 1972.

I began putting them on my knee boards with the flat sides facing outwards for better turning.

Anybody out there have any knowledge on this subject?

I postulated the use of twin asymmetrical surfboard fins,  in 1970, but did not pursue it.       I moved quickly into removable tri fin designs, that same year, having lost interest in twin fin designs.     I don’t think I saw them in use until around '74 or '75.    That’s just when I became aware that some builders were playing with asymmetrical fins.

Unlike Mystro T,

First a little history, like most, the early “production” twins, Hobie and C.C.'s “spacestix” I  just wrote them off (Simmons did that already) as hype.

Not until Reno A, did I take notice.

Got my blood up and twins ruled my life for a while and absolutely no regrets!

First of two. The beginnings, If anyone cares.

Yeah I started experimenting back in 72 after learning about aerodynamics in class, I was already making fish kneeboards with symmetrical foils. Got a lot of questions from the locals at the Cliffs  and some guys at the OB world surfing championships about the fins I designed, had to explain a lot of aerodynamic theory. By the way Bill, I have to appologize to you because back then a friend and I stripped down one of your old long boards to make a couple kneeboards. I regret that mistake now. sorry we were just some dumb kids back then.

I was first inspired by the Con Duece, thought it was cool looking back then, one of the first boards I made for myself back then looked like it.

Then I met Steve Lis at the Cliffs shredding on his fish and then everything changed for me.

BTW Can you tell me what board those first two fins (top picture) were on?

They look like the fins on an Estes model rocket  I had back in the day.

Tom Blake (before Simmons and HA Velzy) 1943

Maybe 1St twin? More like an early V fin.

SL changed things for sure and we are in his debt.

The Con 2 yeah, shoe etc.

Here is an oldie can’t really get a grip on the fins.

And a trip down the road of development.
