today a very well known surfer asked me to make him a board. he wants a skip frye style fish, he’s 6’0 and 195, wants a 5’10… im thinking 17" nose, 21.5-22" widepoint, 3inches up from center, and 16" tail, maybe 3 inches thick, twin fin, etc. any suggestions for rocker, fin placement, bottom design, rails, blank selection, ANYTHING would be very very helpful. also, did skip frye do anything special/different with his fishes that made them unique? THANKS!!! -STEVE PAGE

good advice… what are general characteristics of a fish? flat bottom, 7-9" deep crouch, swallow tips 10.5" apart or so, roughly 16.5 nose, 21 mid, 16 tail, hard tucked edge throughout? rocker… about 3 nose, and 1-2 tail… is this close at all? any other suggestions? where should i put the fins and how much toe and camber, etc? -thannks!!>>> …DON’T OVER SHAPE IT!!!A fish is kind of crude in design and by > trying to over refining it, will make it perform poorly.Try a 7’-3"in > green,See you at …well you know where.Herb

SP, I’ve been hittin’ Newport lately and been looking for the Rambler but no luck. Where you been going lately? My understanding of the older fish styles had larger fins without any toe in or camber… I would like to see what you come up with when you are done. Magoo

i really havent been surfin too much lately… i spend all my time at work and school, 17 units of schoolwork and 30hours per week working takes up a lot of my time, it really really sucks… but ive been going to blackies on friday mornings, sometimes wednesday mornings, and once in a while going down to sano. seeya at the beach -steve …as far as the board, im thinking a real pale blue bottom with a peach-color swirl, with plywood fins, as for the deck, not so sure, maybe a dark emerald green tint, who knows, im open to any suggestions.>>> SP, I’ve been hittin’ Newport lately and been looking for the Rambler but > no luck. SP, Been there and done THAT!!! Shoot me an e-mail when you get sick of your gig, I may be able to hook you up with something that is very good for daily dawn patrols – ya never know, you may stick with it like I have post-grad… Sounds like a good color scheme. Have you ever seen a deep cobalt blue? I saw a guy at Blackies with a longboard that had such a rich deep cobalt shade lammed in that it made it simply striking. Just a thought, Magoo
