Can any of you Australian shapers describe what I believe are alcohol-based blanks? (not a drink). I’ve only heard good things about them and I know such a thing would be illegal in southern California. We are entertaining having some shipped and glassed with the iso/ortho hybrid resins (also illegal in Cal) in a nearby locale. I understand that boards are being glassed with single 4oz. both sides with outstanding results… …is this just a rumor???
I think you are talking about Poly Vinyl Alcohol Foam try these guys, they should be able to help/advise

Please, what are iso/ortho hybrid resins, why are they illegal in California, and why are they so desirable that your company is contemplating using them?

Huh WOW! I never even heard of that type of foam. Anybody with more info on this stuff?
That’s it!!! thanks Hicksy…
All polyester resins are illegal to use in CA right now for open laminating, which is what we do. Polyester is only to be used in closed applications, like closed molding, infusion, RTM or vac bagging. The law is 1162 and has been in effect for years and is all about reducing emissions. The SCAQMD has not seen to enforce this law on the surfboard industry… yet. January 05 the law goes nationwide and is called MACT. http://www.cfa-hq.org/ga/mact-standards.cfm Check it out.
Howzit Roy, I’m on my first batch of iso/ortho resin and so far I like it. It cures almost rock hard so that’s why you can get away with single 4 oz glassing. It does have a unique odor that kinda spooked me at first so I called Fiberglass Hi. and asked if it was more toxic and they told me no it isn’t. It costs a little more but not even enough for me to raise my prices. If you’re interested call Fiberglass Hi. and ask about their # 1421 resin. By the way you can get it as a UV resin. Aloha, Kokua
We’ve had that resin in FL for 10-15 years. Most people use it. Decent stuff.

Whats different about it?
I thought “alcohol based blanks” were those bits of the night before that you can’t remember. Seriously though, you could try to contact Burford Reinforced Plastics at Currumbin (don’t know if they have a web page). phone number is Int + 61 7 55343777
…man i use and used the Aust. blanks
…surfblanks (in Brazil is Teccel) burford, bennett foams…the surfblanks are more white-blue foam, the chemical is pretty good, not the stringer glued to foams…
the burford are more white…the bennett is the better for me…
…one are isof one fenolics… man, are all the same…
…i think when is dificult in a place to obtain some stuff the people imagine that is better…
…clark is still the best ONLY for the QUANTITY of plugs…
PVA Foam is also used in medicine for blood disorders, can be used as a clotting agent. France banned it in 1991 and customs were instructed to seize anything like that landing on their shores.

Wear a mask and don’t eat any type of foam. I did some checking and it is a fire hazard risk, has toxic fumes when worked and needs max ventilation. Pretty much like all foam blanks, treat like asbestos.
