planning a trip to baja, im from the gulf coast so im not used to long rides but my dream is long right hander point break. just wondering if anyone has any info, pics, opinions, suggestions, etc. on where to go and what to do. thanks. rev.
B North of Camalu can be very crowded and localized at the long point breaks. If you just drive the road, you can see it off to your right.
Farther down, around GNegro, points above and below, off the main highway, don’t bother to hit Sea of Cortez, turn towards the ocean instead.
However, if you want famous super crowded long, slow, easy point right, you can go inland and back out again.
When (what month) are you planning to go? North or South Baja? If you are thinking of trunking it while you surf a green-blue wave with a white sand beach then you are probably thinking of Southern Baja during the spring/summer months on the Sea of Cortez side (the “East Cape”). Be careful, though, because it is fickle and, as LEEDD suggests, you aren’t really going to find a true barreling type of high performance wave over there. That being said, you can have a heck of a lot of fun if you are lucky enough to catch it when it is working. My wife and I surfed 9 Palms in late March, 2004 with only 1 other person out. It was 2-3 ft. overhead and my 84 year old grandmother would have had no problem dropping in (and she has never surfed). Long rides and you would have been OK on anything from a shortboard to a log. If you want more juice, are OK with colder water, etc. then the Pacific side in North or South Baja right now (winter) would be a good call. ill be going in july…thanks for the input guys.
best to keep it in baja sur during july(south of 28th parallel)once below that landmark, there are many reefs, beachbreaks and points to check out.suggest getting the Baja Almanac and maybe (if they still offer it)the travelling surf report(guide, whatever) from surfer(or surfing) magazine.also, make sure to have a passport as you will need to get a tourist permit upon crossing the border(or if you fly in, either way get one)if you have any other questions about Baja, check: bajanomad.com.have fun!!!
