I have a friend that will be in Jakarta for an extended period of time and surf in Bali for a bit. His son is a pretty good surfer, 5’4 under 100lbs, 12-13 yo. He is used to surfing on Oahu, and is a barrel magnet.
What do you guys recommend for a quiver for a kid like that? Also what is different about a north shore board, and something for Bali waves? I know there are plenty different kine in both places, but what would you do different in design for surfing the normal bali waves, as opposed to places on the north shore, like haliewa? If his normal board is around 5’3x18.5x2 1/4, should he stay around the same or up the board size.
Also any shapers over there I should have him call when he gets there?
Me, I’d bump it up 3 or 4 inches in length, one inch in width, and 3/8ths inch in thickness. At 12 or 13 years old, he should be growing fast. Give him something to grow into. He should also take his Hawaii board too, as that is the devil he knows.
Thanks Bill. Since I made him his last board he grew about 5" , plus some weight . He definitely has some growing left.
He had talked to friends that surfed there, and they told him the waves start off slopier then what he normally surfs but then start to barrel and throw more.
IMO unless he’s looking for softballs why wouldn’t he use what he comfortable with & he’d normally ride here in Hawaii. under 100lbs + good surfer, those dims are ok if it was really foiled out. A bigger corky board will be a hinderance for kid taking off in the hook / under the lip. Using a smaller board and pushing the limits of your wave size comfort zone forces you to learn how to read waves better and how to use the pocket …
I will definitely tell him to contact Gordon Hansen. One of the main places he surfs, alot of the lifeguards have boards made by him, and they are all really good.
