baloon mix as a final coat - Compsand

Hi Guys

this is my 6 compsand board, I can not get hold of clear epoxy in SA at a good price, I use Balloon mix as the final coat, replacing the normally used hot coat.  But I find it very dificult getting a nice even spread of the balloon mix on the board.  What tricks do you guys have for this method of final coat( filling in the Weave).  A normal hot coat is a breeze you just brush it on but this thick mix is a bitch!

Cheers

Grant

Hans is right

I do compsand boards and my final coat is a lightweight filler you apply on thick and then sand down to weave.

gives you a smooth finish and less weight… found baloon mix a bit heavy… other alternatives are better.

They do it in windsurfboards as a light weight sanding coat.

I have never done it, so I have no experience with how to apply it.

I believe they apply it pretty thick and then sand it down until they see the HD foam or carbon fibres.

If it is not fully painted, you get this kind of finish:

All the cool boys have it today!

hi Grant, what is balloon mix? do you mean epoxy mixed with micro ballons? I’d just use the resin for hotcoating that you used for lamination. Everything else is not worth the trouble.
