A dumb question: Would one use an electric planer on a balsa wood blank to shape it? Followed by palm sanders, and sanding blocks? Never shaped one, just might do it one day.
A dumb question: Would one use an electric planer on a balsa wood blank to > shape it? Followed by palm sanders, and sanding blocks? Never shaped one, > just might do it one day. It’s planer and planes all the way, a surform is useless as the fiberous grains load it up instantly. The farther you take it with the plane the less elbow grease that will be needed later. Balsa boards are a labor of love and nothing is more beautiful than a finely crafted one. All the sanding has to be done in a direct line with the grain, if not the cross scratches show up like a sore thumb. Each piece of wood has a different density and sands either easier or harder than the piece next to it. Jim “the Woodman” Phillips
