im going to put to balsa 1/8-3" strips into a 8’3 mini longboard these are my thoughts: 1: template onto the shaped blank the outline 2: route out to 1/8 depth 3: pre-laminate balsa strips 4: resin strips into the routed slots 5: resin pinline the edges 6: glass as normal if i wanted to add nose and tail blocks i would have to pre-lam those as well? would this be the correct way to do it? thanks
Paul are trying to get the wood to go around the rails in this process? Balsa isn’t as soft and cuddly as one may think, going to what would be the lap line is easier. Vaccuum bagging is the way to go, but resin isn’t the adhesive to use, a polyurethane glue is much better for permanent adhesion. Either way, you have a really BIG project on your hands, go slowly, do dry assemblies first, checking for fit, etc. Nose and tail blocks go on last, masking around them with tape to protect the surface around them. Have fun
im only putting on 2 stripes like the wingnut board out of endless summer 2. so use a poly glu to stick down the stripes. do i need to coat the balsa in lam resin before sticking them down? thanks
Tape off as if you were doing a color stripe, give plenty of room for splash, the polyurethsan foams as it cures and will expand out of the edge seam. Apply it like you were staing the wood, a little goes a very long way. Masking off the top side of the wood will help keep it clean too. Wear gloves, nothing cleans the glue off hands completely and it takes a week for it to wear off.
thanks jim will give it a try.
