I have been cleaning up things around the shop and found 2 sets of steel shaping racks. They were stored in my dust collector for a few years which leaked so they are pretty rusted but I don’t think they are beyond use or recovery. They aren’t pretty at the moment but I hate to throw them away knowing someone might want to try and rejuvinate them. I can’t even guess at the legends that have shaped on these racks during those early years at ProGlass. Too bad these racks can’t talk! Below is a photo of what they looked like in operation. Not the best view of the racks but the best I had on file.
These are great racks that I had custom made to my design when ProGlass was built 20+ years ago. I think they cost about $400 a set back then. They are easily adjustable in heigth. The head is offset from the post so that rotating the head 180 degrees in the base will increase or decrease the width between the racks. They have a steel base plate drilled and ready to mount to a floor.
Here is the downside. The head’s post, which slides inside of the base’s post, are seized together with rust. But with some work they will come apart. Some move a bit as it is.
They are laying behind my shop and are free to the first person to get here and take them away. But you should probably check with me in the shop first as there are security guards on site here and you don’t want to stir up any unnecessary trouble. If you really need both take them, if others also want them take only one set and leave the other for someone else. First come first serve. By next weekend they are going in the dumpster.
Howzit Bill, There is a product called Rust Buster that should free up those heads with no problems, the stuff is the best I’ve ever used for this type of problem.Aloha,Kokua

[=Blue]Thanks Kokua
Hopefully the new owners of the racks will find that helpful
Remember though… first come first serve… no reservations
Hi Bill, I came by and had a look but I don’t need bolt downs in my little shaping/ding repair shed. I tried to say hi too but the shop seemed quite busy. Next time I’m up there I’ll say hi.
Sorry we didn’t connect. It has been crazy busy in the shop. Barely time to come up for air. Do stop in again and introduce yourself.
fostachild came by and picked up one of the rack sets. I guess the other one is still up for grabs unless it has been scooped up since I last went outside. I will check when I leave in a few minutes.

Wow! Hey Bill is the other set still available? I can’t believe I let that damn wanksalot get to this before me!
I’m just about finished with my little hackyard shed, would kill for 'em.
Nice job on the room. I can see you have a lot of work still to do so I won’t mention the obvious. But you might want to get rid of the pipe insulation and shelf brackets and replace them with 3/4" dowels drilled into the studs about 6"-9" apart vertically. You should get room for a couple of them over head high and then tape small surfboard foam pads on them to create 3 point racks so that the boards don’t twist to fit any unlevelness of the dowels. Two pads at the rear 8" apart or so, one at the nose centered. Also round the tips of the dowels.
